A Great Update to a Great All In One Exam Guide

Darril's 2nd edition is a great expansion and follow-up to his first edition (which was also great). Topics are discussed clearly and use real world examples. Questions are available at the end of each chapter, plus it includes 250 questions on the included DVD with descriptive explainations of why the wrong answers are wrong. Newly updated & expanded to include the April 15, 2015 changes to the SSCP exam. Includes a .pdf of the book as well. Highly recommended for anyone planning to sit the SSCP exam.

Worth every penny

I just passed the SSCP exam using this book as my primary study source. It is very well written and easy to follow. When you take the end of chapter quizzes, the book does a great job explaining why an answer is correct or incorrect, as does the practice exam. If you read the book, take the quizzes in the book at the end of each chapter, and take the 250 question practice exam on the included CD ROM, you should be good to go to take and pass this exam. Good luck!

Another great book by Darril Gibson!

Very clearly written, I used Darril Gibson' book for Security + and when I saw he also had an SSCP book I knew that it had to be a great resource and it sure is. It includes and exam review at the end of every chapter and questions to go with them. Along with 250 additional questions (different from the questions in the book) on an included CD, the amount of questions are weighted similarly to the real SSCP exam. On the CD is a Secure PDF copy of the book for reading on your computer or mobile device.

I’d like to share my love for the game with them ...

I learned how to play chess from my dad when I was about 11. I even used to compete in tournaments! Now that I have little nephews and nieces, I’d like to share my love for the game with them too. I got this book to get them reading about it, and hopefully pique their interest. From the viewpoint of a non-beginner, I can say this is a very good handbook for someone who has never played the game before. It teaches everything from the history, to the definition of terms, to the actual mechanics of the game. The author even shared some tricks, and included the most common strategies like the four- and five-move checkmates. The illustrations were a nice addition, and effective because they’re clear and detailed. The truth is, the game does not require high levels of skill. It is easy to learn and master as you go on and keep practicing, and it’s great that the author mentioned that bit in his conclusion of the book. Well-written and comprehensive guide. I highly recommend this for the chess newbie!

I am very interested in playing chess but I am not good at it and that’s why I purchased this book for increasing my skill. I think this book is a great resource for beginner as me. This book describes about the origin and basic rules of chess. It gives plans and strategies which are easy to remember, but not too difficult to understand. It also explained the concepts and terms used in chess. I also understood the different notations and chess openings after reading this book. I appreciate this book greatly because, this book is written in a clear cut manner. I hope you will learn a lot from this book. I recommend this book to everyone who desires to learn how to play chess. Thanks to the author for his special book.

Overall, a great book!

Become A Chess Master - Beginners Guide Into The Ancient Game of Chess – first of all, the title appealed to me a lot. This is great read especially to those new to chess but with a mind to eventually master it. I like this book as it gives so many essential opening strategies to help anyone prepare to win and learn to excel in the game. Also, great discussions on different strategies such as Knights Pawn Opening, Indian Game, Ruy Lopez, and among others. Overall, a great book!

Just two new practice tests

I am a private math tutor and author of the Ultimate Guide to the Math ACT.

I gave this book five stars because it has the best practice tests. However the content is identical to previous editions, even the page numbers have not changed! The only difference is that there are two additional practice tests included here (one I recognize as the test from December 2008). The bottom line is that you get a better value by spending $21.50 for five practice tests in this third edition versus spending $20 for the first three practice tests in the earlier editions (Amazon prices as of 8/25/11).

An even better deal is to scroll up this page to the box called "Formats" in orange letters. Click on the Paperback link and get the book without the CD. The material on the CD is not very helpful and getting just the paperback will save you a few dollars.

UPDATE AS OF MAY 4, 2013: Amazon has made it slightly more difficult to find the book without the CD. Scroll up the page to where it says "Formats" in orange letters. Then click on the plus sign to the left of the "Paperback" link to expand it. Then click on the link that says "Paperback, September 6, 2011."

UPDATE AS OF JANUARY 2014: Amazon is pricing the book with the CD to be 42 cents less than the book without the CD. No idea why that would happen.

UPDATE AS OF APRIL 2014: Amazon no longer sells the book without the CD, so the instructions above regarding formats no longer applies. The book without the CD can be purchased on the Amazon web site but only through third parties.

Good Preparation!

The book has 5 legitimate ACT tests, with fully explained answers to each test.

My junior year I took the ACT with the rest of my class, and got composite: 25, English: 25, Math: 28, Reading: 26, Science: 19

My senior year I took the ACT again midyear, studying the Real ACT a month prior to the test, and got Composite: 28, English: 33, Math: 32, Reading: 25, Science: 22.

Similar to many others, I hate standardized tests. But, a big way to prepare for them is by taking the right classes senior year. My senior year included an English 101 writing course, and pre-calculus. Both classes greatly helped me improve in their respective studies.

If you want to improve your reading score, this book will NOT help you. Reading for speed is something you build with practice, and reading for different elements of literature is something you build by taking a moment to reflect on text you read. I did not read much during my senior year, so I must admit the ACT score accurately reflects that.

Unfortunately, I have no advice for Science. You can love physics, or admire chemistry and biology if not all three, but that does not mean anything on the ACT Science test.

Good source for practice tests, obviously because of the fact that this book has been published by the test maker. One thing I liked about this book in particular is that unlike the College Board's SAT Preparation "blue book," the "red book" provides detailed answer explanation right in the book after each of the practice tests. Though I believe you can gain access to the explanations of the blue book's practice test questions if you have an account and check everything online. I find that to be a hassle, having the answer key and explanations at your fingertips makes all the difference.

She covers leaves, seeds, fruits, flowers, and roots—43, in total—with such information as reaping medicinal and nutritional benefits, growing, harvesting, and preparing the brew. Although the format is somewhat repetitious, and the photographs are not the sharpest, her wisdom is demonstrated on every page. For instance, sidebars called “Teabag Friends” and “Tips” respectively identify complementary tea tastes and alternative uses (as well as occasional caveats, like don’t confuse African violets with violets). As Refreshing as a Cup of Tea

Being a long-time practicing herbalist, I am not easily impressed by books on herbs. More often than not it seems as though writers rely on what others have written, regurgitating the same information again and again without adding much, if any, new material from their own understanding, practice, and experience.

Not so with Homegrown Tea: An Illustrated Guide to Planting, Harvesting, and Blending Teas and Tisanes. The author, Cassie Liversidge, has provided a book that is as refreshing as hibiscus tea on a hot summer afternoon, combining scientific information, traditional and folklore traditions, and her own experiences with each plant she features.

Liversidge begins with tea, both black and green, and the goes on to explore various alternatives to that most traditional of beverages, such as lemon balm, blueberries, and honeysuckle. Odd as it is, I had never really thought of trying to grow actual tea plants. While I realize it would be impossible for me to grow enough to keep my family in tea for a year, I do think it will be fun to grow at least a couple just to see how they grow and try my hand at harvesting and preparing our own homegrown tea.

The book is beautifully put together and effectively organized. It is divided in to larger sections like leaves, seeds, fruits, flowers and roots. Each section offers several examples and gives information on medicinal benefits, growing and harvesting, blending and making a tea or tisane with that plant or plant part. I especially enjoyed the "Tea Bag Friends" sidebars, in which Liversidge offers ideas and tips for blending other plants with the one that is being featured. Her writing style is interesting and individual, and one gets the clear impression that she has personal experience with each herb, fruit or root she is discussing.

Whether you are a tea enthusiast, herbalist, or gardener, you will find loads of good information and sound advice in this lovely, unique book.

If you love tea YOU HAVE TO GET THIS BOOK. This is the most essential book for anyone who loves to drink, make, gift, and create teas. Whether you're just having a drink of tea with friends, making a pot for a few family members, giving a gift of tea to loved ones, or trying to think of a new blend to come up with, you need this book. The amount of information it has on things to use in teas as well as the actual cultivating of the camellia sinensis plant itself is just amazing. It's a great read, keeps it interesting by giving facts about the seeds, fruits, leaves, herbs, roots, and tubers you can use to make teas. And it explains the differences between green teas and blacks and tips on how to properly brew teas. It's very informative.

One of the best books on the Roman Catholic Church

As someone who has studied the Dark Ages, the Reformation, and the history of the conflict with Rome against the true Gospel, I can testify that this is one of the best books ever written on Rome. But what this author does, which is so needed, is to show the influence of the Roman Church in the modern world. He cites papal bulls, encyclicals, and one source after another, showing the manipulations of the Catholic Church in modern times. Robbins proves beyond any doubt that Rome has continued to pursue its ambition of world domination, in spite of all the media propaganda to the contrary, and the opinion of blinded evangelicals who seem to believe that the pope is now an "angel of light" or that Catholicism is simply another denomination of Christianity.

This is a great book for research and reference, very meticulously put together. If you are someone who has been following the trail of historic evidence to figure out why the Freemasons, the Skull and Bones, and the Illuminati seem to get blamed for everything -- while most researchers ignore the Vatican and the Jesuit Order -- then this book should be in your library. The author proves that the cry of the Reformers against the Great Harlot of Revelation 17 was not in vain. The Bible gives no uncertain sound as to the danger of the city on seven hills, and neither does this excellent book.

Perhaps most compelling was his documentation of Rome's intelligence agency, which is said to be the largest
and most capable in the world. Great book for research!

A Terrific Book With Minor Flaws

Robbins takes up the considerable task of examining what the Catholic
Church position on economics and politics is and has been over its 1500+
year history. He does this using church canon law, papal writings, and
the writings of its intellectual Fathers like Aquinas. In other words,
he uses a great deal of primary source material to justify his analysis.
(Well, he uses quotes of the source material found in later anthologies,
to be more precise.) To support his analysis and conclusions, Robbins
also cites a breadth of commentators and critics of Catholicism both
from within and outside the Church.
This is primarily a work of scholarship not a popular or religious
commentary (except as noted in the "Flaws" section below). Having said
that, _you_ do not particularly have to be a scholar to understand it.
Some general understanding of Church and secular history is helpful,
and, if you are unschooled in theological terminology, a dictionary
would be helpful.
Except as noted in the "Flaws" section below, this is primarily a work
on economics and politics. Of necessity, it also addresses some issues
of Church doctrine and theology, since the economic/ political theory
springs in some degree from that doctrine.
The Punchline
-------------
Robbins critique' is devastating. He makes a compelling case that the
intellectual tradition of Catholicism is statist, collectivist, hostile
to constitutional government, friendly to fascism and totalitarian
secular states, hostile to property rights, and even supportive of
slavery and other human rights abuses. He further demonstrates that
these were not just the positions of the ancient Roman Church, but are
the intellectual currency of the Vatican through the late 20th Century.
Along the way, he provides a lot of little historical tidbits like how
the claim of the Church for temporal political power is founded on a
document ("The Donation Of Constantine" - reproduced in the Appendix)
known to be a forgery as early as the 15th Century. Finally, and
importantly, he addresses late 20th Century efforts to rewrite history
and present the Church as friendly to Classical Liberal ideas.
Like many non-Catholics, I'd always assumed that the Roman Church's
excesses were merely the product of unfettered power prior to the
Reformation, and that it had adapted to Classical Liberal ideas in the
West. Robbins demolishes this idea, and goes to some lengths to show
just how hostile the intellectual underpinnings of the Church remain to
Capitalist economy, property rights, separation of Church and State, and
so forth. I never quite understood how an institution putatively
fighting evil could stand by quietly during the Nazi attrocities or the
pederasty within the priesthood. Now I get it.
Flaws
-----
Robbins is a scholar, but he is also a devout Christian in the
Westminster Confession Presbyterian tradition. In and of itself, this
presents no problem. However, this book is by turns history, analysis,
and polemic. The polemic is thankfully minimal, but he undermines the
credibility of his scholarship when he includes footnote comments like,
"the antichrist can be heard in the encyclicals of the present pope." I
have no particular objection to his doctrinal observations and opinions,
they are simply not segregated clearly from his historical scholarship
and analysis, which is after all, what the book is supposed to be about.
In weaving his theological commentary into the economic/political
history, he opens himself up to the legitimate criticism that parts of
the book read like a religious tract rather than pure scholarship.
In those places where he does indulge in theological observations, he
does a poor job of defining terms. His use of the term "Christian" or
"Scriptural" are not what most secular readers or even Catholic readers
would understand them to be. I have the advantage of a pretty thorough
background in Christian theology in various traditions, but if you do
not, these portions of the book will seem at least strange, or more
probably, inflamatory and ad hominem in nature (which I do not believe
he intended).
Thankfully, this is a minor problem - the book remains primarily a
historical fact gathering and critique' of Catholic economics and
politics.
The other problem here is validating the analysis (I take it on faith
that Robbins facts are right). I am aware of no scholarly response to
Robbins claims which might refute or amend his conclusions. It would be
interesting to see, for example, a Jesuit response to this book...
Finally, there is a theme taken up in the book I wish he had spent more
time on. Early in the writing, he shows how our modern Classical Liberal
ideas about property and personal rights sprang, in part, from the
Calvinist Reformation thinkers. Furthermore, in keeping with the overall
theme of the book, he goes on to say that these Classical Liberal ideas
were in direct opposition to Roman Catholic thinking. I wish he would
have _ended_ the book with this topic and expanded it a lot more. There
is some very rich analysis to be done here, and his treatment is long on
assertion, but shallow in supporting evidence. What's there is really
good, but I wanted another 50 pages on this topic alone because it is
not well treated in any Church History I've ever seen.
Recommendation
--------------
As I said at the outset, this is just a terrific piece of scholarship
and writing. It is as about well written as something of this nature can
be ... it is not an "easy" read, but it is not a dry scholastic text
either. If you enjoy reading detailed histories, you should enjoy this
as well. Again, I caution the devout Catholics among us - be prepared to
be shocked, dismayed, and/or angry if you read this - Robbins
conclusions are extremely unkind (to say the least) to Roman
Catholicism, both past and present.

Awesome sheets, but dented and bent

I love this Korean drama and was extremely excited to find sheet music available for Boys over Flowers on Amazon. The product was great, except that it came very bent and dented. I was extremely disappointed, and wish it had been handled more carefully.

I have loved this book since the first day I read it

I have loved this book since the first day I read it. Since my family and I live on a farm we have had lots of occasions to ask, "How goes the work?'. The proper answer, of course, is always "QUACK!" It has come to be a multi-generational (4) inside family joke. One of my granddaughters came upon a group of girls diligently studying the Russian language. Without thinking she asked, "How goes the work, girls?" She heard one girl say,"QUACK!" My granddaughter was so excited about that response that she screamed with delight! She said that was the first time anyone who wasn't a member of her family had known the "correct response" to that question. It is a very simple but lifetime-learning book in spite of its few pages. I am buying a copy of the book today for a man in my adult Sunday School class who, when I asked the class, "How goes the work?" was the only one with the right answer. He is going to get the Farmer Duck award.

I Could Still Hear the Kids Whispering "How Goes the Work?"

even two weeks after I read them the story in their second grade class. Kids love it. It has all the entry points for beginning readers, and adults love it too--for similar reasons. I've had university faculty tell me that it's the Communist Manifesto for kids (remember the centrality of labor, organization, and consciousness), that it's a Trotskyist text (note the role of the Duck at the end) and that it's a classic of feminism (note the multiple voices that had to be considered to fashion the uprising). It's a classic, from whatever interpretation, because it's full of joy, resistance, and hope.
