Marie Force Does it again!

I've read all the books by Marie Force and I have to say I like them all. This book, is slightly different to her previous books. In my opinion, this book's primary focus was mystery and suspense and the love story was secondary. The combination created a fun and exciting read.

Samantha, a DC Detective is assigned to the murder investigation of a young U.S. Senator. When she goes to the scene of the crime, she learns that the body was discovered by the Senator's best friend and Chief of Staff, Nick. Sam and Nick had previously met six years ago and had a one night stand. They have not seen each other or spoken since then. This unexpected reunion brings back a lot of memories to both of them as they try to work together to solve the murder. I couldn't put the book down trying to figure out who had killed the senator and what was going to happen between Nick and Sam.

This story if filled with lots of characters that were surprisingly well developed considering the length of the book. You come to love a few of them by the end. Some might find parts of this book too gruesome or violent, but if you can see past these, you will find yourself immersed in the plot from start to finish.

The hopeless romantic in me only wished the romance played a slightly bigger part in the book, but I read somewhere both Sam and Nick come back in Ms. Force's next book. So hopefully I will get more romance there and see what happens next! :) I cannot wait for her next book!

Ok, but a little too much police procedural. I'd like more interesting personalities and more emotional pull.

FATAL AFFAIR by Marie Force.

STORY BRIEF:
Sam is a police detective. She is assigned the case of murdered Senator John O'Connor. Six years ago she and Nick had a one-night affair. He called her several times afterwards, but her roommate intercepted the calls and never gave her the messages. Sam later married and divorced Peter.

Nick is chief of staff for his best friend John (the senator). When John doesn't show up for work, Nick goes to John's home and discovers the body. He helps Sam throughout her investigation. He also shows her that he loves her and always has. She is reluctant to have a relationship with Nick until after the murder is solved.

A secondary minor story is about the Johnsons. Sam was involved in a crack shooting incident. The Johnson boy was shot and killed. Sam did nothing wrong but felt guilty. The mother threatened to kill Sam. Some attempts are made on Sam's life.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
The story is primarily a police procedural. The reader is with Sam as she talks to many different people: cops, medical examiners, witnesses, suspects, the press, etc. We slowly uncover details and secrets about John's life. This was well thought out, no plot holes, no major problems. Sam is an excellent detective. She's strong, competent, and does some smart things while solving the case. Although there are attempts on Sam's life, I didn't feel fear or suspense (which I would have liked). It was more the feeling of old-time hard-boiled detective fiction. I did have one unanswered question. The killer cut off a body part before killing/stabbing John in the neck. Why would John lay in bed naked and be still while the killer cut off his part? There was no evidence of a struggle. How this was done becomes more of a mystery after learning who the killer was.

A secondary story is the wonderful relationship between Nick and Sam. He loves her and shows it in ways that would melt any woman (I think). That was the best part of the book. After one of the sex scenes my thoughts were: that's a really neat one, very sensual.

On balance, the police procedural was too dry for me. I would have liked some weird or interesting personalities thrown in. Everyone here was predictable, reasonable, normal. The only surprise or unexpected parts were "uncovering the facts" of John's life and the mystery of "who done it." I'm not sure what was missing for me to give it more stars - probably not enough emotional pull. It was an ok read.

Minor error: Patricia Donaldson was a character. The author called her Patricia Davidson at the 5246 count. It may have happened more than once.

Suspenseful mysteries keep you riveted

The Fatal series starts off with a story of political intrigue, an unexpected romance and plenty of mysteries to solve amid the escalating danger. Marie Force points readers in the direction of numerous suspects, and the road to discovering the identity of the brutal killer is filled with countless barricades to make the investigative journey extremely difficult and definitely compelling. There will not be an instant of FATAL AFFAIR which you will want to skip, as clues are subtly given yet nothing is concrete until the final staggering revelation.

After required to take a leave of absence because of an unfortunate incident during a search, Sergeant Samantha Holland is finally back at work. The Washington, D.C. detective is quickly given a case which could improve her public status, or it might destroy her career completely if she does not handle everything by the book. Senator John O'Connor has been murdered, and it is up to Sam to discover his killer as swiftly as possible. One major obstacle right from the beginning of the investigation is having to repeatedly talk with the senator's chief of staff, Nick Cappuano, a man with whom she spent just one night but has never forgotten.

It has been six years since Nick was with Sam, but his memories of that extraordinary night are still crystal clear. As the investigation proceeds, she knows things must be kept strictly professional between them, yet he seems to be personally affecting her more profoundly with every subsequent meeting. When several startling facts are uncovered plus discrepancies turn up during interviews, Sam knows solving this murder is not going to be at all easy, especially when it takes all her self-discipline to concentrate only on the case and not on her feelings for Nick.

Emotional realism makes a story by Marie Force totally believable. All the way through FATAL AFFAIR, feelings are depicted with complete genuineness as sincerity backs any responses. Whether a character is in a jovial mood or is frightened by a traumatic event, their candidly honest thoughts are communicated with outspokenly frank words. Several of the discussions between Nick and Sam are exceedingly amusing with quick-witted humor, and other times their conversations are overflowing with compassionate concern. I became emotionally involved in the lives of these two when they are first met, and every additional fact about them only made my connection more powerful. There are some issues they must both deal with before their relationship can become a lasting one, and any struggles are clearly portrayed with careful examination of generally undeclared beliefs. Being privy to their inner way of thinking let me come to understand the driving force behind many carried out actions, and these stirring descriptions frequently touched my own feelings. The sexual awareness between Nick and Sam is sky-high, and this causes some scenes to be packed with tension while any intimate encounters are blazing with steamy heat and heartfelt emotions. A number of other characters are particularly distinctive, and the moments when Sam's partner, Freddie Cruz, is featured show his sharp mind with innumerable witty comebacks. As each mystery unfolds, the suspense mounts concerning who is behind the killing, and my own imagination continuously took various paths as new details about the possible suspects came to light. Ms. Force has created an outstanding story where the truth is masterfully divulged after more than a few unforeseen twists. FATAL AFFAIR engages the mind with rivetingly suspenseful mysteries while your heart is grabbed by the intense emotions.

About the Author
A Stanford Ph.D., Professor David Mulroy has taught Classics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee since 1973. He has published both scholarly and general-interest essays and three books of translations of ancient Greek and Roman poetry. His latest work is a translation of the poems of Catullus.

Very Personal Proof

As a warning, though I read this book (in proof form), I am not going to comment on it exactly--or perhaps better, comment on it theoretically. I want to relate a brief story. Dr. Mulroy was my Greek (and some Latin) teacher and he will always be my primary mentor. When I first fell in love with Greece through my encounter with Sophocles' "Antigone", I knocked at Dr. Mulroy's office to see if he'd be interested in reading more Greek tragedy with me (I had not read the "Antigone" with him, but was guided to him). He gladly agreed to spend a summer reading with me. Well, eventually there came a point when Dr. Mulroy said it was time for me to learn the primary languages--Latin and Greek--instead of reading translations. So I followed his suggestion and enrolled on Latin. Mind you, I had no education in grammar in high school. Well, perhaps needless to say, I never worked so hard in my life, and failed out. I was told, euphemistically, that "some people just aren't good at these things"--i.e., I was too stupid. I reported this to Dr. Mulroy (unfortunately he wasn't my teacher), and he set out a plan for me of over a year's study of English grammar. He's since told me I was the first and only student to ever follow his advice upon not being able to succeed on the first run of Greek or Latin. Well, after this year-plus education in grammar, I then re-enrolled, this time in Greek. I was now told I was gifted at languages. Now, of course, neither teacher was correct: Dr. Mulroy was correct. I was lacking certain basic tools without which learning a classical language was impossible. I went on to do an MA in Greek linguistics and a PhD in Ancient Philosophy. I am now a university professor of philosophy, and largely have Dr. Mulroy to thank for this. He understood what everyone else failed to understand, and this knowledge--and my trust in him--led to my success.

An intelligent defense of formal grammar instruction

In pellucid prose, author David Mulroy, a classicist at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, discusses the deleterious effect that a decades-long avoidance of formal instruction in grammar has had on American students: SAT scores are down; reading comprehension has declined; enrollment in most foreign languages has dropped; and students suffer in general from a "higher illiteracy." While students can, that is--some of them, at least--express themselves adequately, they are not proficient at explicating the literal meanings of grammatically complex texts. Asked to paraphrase the first sentence of the Declaration of Independence, for example, one of the author's students writes: "It doesn't matter where you came from. In the end we are all human beings. Humans are at the top of the food chain, but it doesn't mean we shouldn't respect nature. Because we have one earth, learn to preserve it."

The purpose of grammar, Mulroy explains, is twofold: "It preserves and perfects understanding of the great literature of the past, and it contributes to eloquent self-expression." He argues persuasively for a return to a concentration on formal grammatical instruction in schools, not out of some school-marmish obsession with sentence-ending prepositions or the like, but because grammar is a foundation for further understanding: "Intellectuals work with words. Questioning the value of basic grammar is like asking whether farmers should know the names of their crops and animals." He points out, too, what most of us probably take for granted, that the world benefits enormously from the existence of a standard English, which grammatical instruction helps maintain: speakers of English across the globe can communicate with one another easily, which was not true of English speakers mere villages apart in the medieval period.

Mulroy hits on a number of topics in his short book, among them the ancient liberal arts curriculum, the history of the classification of words into eight basic categories, educational practices in the middle ages, and progressive education. Happily, he also includes a section on sentence diagramming. This allowed me to pass a pleasant half hour diagramming sentences with my eight-year-old: intrigued by the game at first, she came to think me unusual in my interests, and facetiously suggested we try subtracting for pleasure next. She may mock, but then she's not likely to wind up thinking the Declaration of Independence was an early-American plea for nature preserves.

Cool Robots, No Fluff

You want cool robots? David's got you covered. This book is almost cover-to-cover mecha, of all different types, in David's excellent style. A fine volume to just relax and page through, letting your imagination run wild. He keeps his "fluff" to a minimum, just a few sentences on each piece, so you're not wading through walls of text. Just cool robots.

I don't normally purchase art books, but I decided to pick this up over the summer. David White is a fantastic artist and the books really show off his love for the source material. If you're a fan of giant robots, transforming mecha, and just supporting a great artist, this book is a no brainer.
