Exquisite study of a little-known sacred art

This book is a thoroughgoing, well-rounded study of the artists of Nathadwara town in Rajasthan, India, and of their various art productions and practices: a rigorous and innovative ethnography of living and deceased painters and painting in the Pushtimarg tradition of Vaisnavism. The book design is a delight, with its miniature drawings from Nathadwara art motifs placed on the pages and also at the end of each chapter, plus the beautifully printed color (and B&W) illustrations-a true feast for the eyes.

In her Introduction the author situates the art in relation to previous scholarship, then briefly surveys the history of Pushtimarg and how it became settled in Rajasthan, the role of the picchavai in this tradition, the question of whether it is art or folk art, and the scope of the study.

The next nine chapters intensively discuss the following topics: Mural paintings by Nathadwara artists; artists' workshops at turn-of-the-century; a glimpse of the temple in old Bombay based on an artist's sketchbook; artist families as frameworks for the evolution of style; an artist's eye to the future as exemplified in a sketchbook; the influence of British stylistics on an England-returned master artist; the women artists of Nathadwara; artists' histories and myths of caste and kin and location, and the genealogists who maintain and also invent them to please their patrons; and a conclusion that surveys issues of religion in relation to art and life in Nathadwara, artist views on aesthetic excellence, and younger artists' experimentation with other kinds of painting.

Throughout her in-depth examination of art and art making based on interviews, photographing art on location, studying rare artist sketchbooks, and extensive travels to important sites in and away from Nathadwara, the author reveals the many ways in which the artists of Nathadwara experience and fulfill their religious devotion in their works.

Econocide tells the story of how an overweening focus on economic development, in concert with biased housing policy practices, and a virtual abandonment of civic responsibility, has forsaken the urban poor in Cincinnati, Ohio. Alice Skirtz shows how the city has used legislation and the administration of public policy to serve the ends of privatizing public assets and displacing people who are perceived as undesirable because they lack economic power and privilege.

Skirtz argues that enactment and implementation of legislation grounded in contempt for the economically disadvantaged and schemes contrived to keep affordable housing off the market and to reduce or devolve essential social services have resulted in gross economic inequities, manifest in a collectivity she identifies as "economic others."

The book examines the constructs of economic others and econocide through three themes:

• The development of exclusion ordinances to remove economic others
• The indirect removal of economic others by means of policy decisions
• The privatization of governance to absolve the city of its social and ethical responsibilities

Econocide is more than just a profound history of a sociopolitical vicious circle, it suggests a way out of it—not just for Cincinnati but for all cities in which econocide is occurring. Alice Skirtz, PhD, MSW, LISW-S, is a long-time member of NASW. She has been active in social work with people who are homeless and economically disadvantaged since the 1960s, is a founding organizer of the Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless, and continues to be actively involved in local issues of affordable housing and economic equity.

Econocide-Gentrification of another neighborhood.

Alice Skirtz writes this with the clarity and detail of an academic work, and the message is clear. Both private forces and the City power structure combine to remove poor people from a Cincinnati neighborhood, Over the Rhine, in order to gentrify it and make profits for private developers, and "revitalize" the area by replacing long term poor inhabitants with upper middle class people . The City has turned over the task to a private entity, the Cincinnati Center City Development Corporation. (3CDC) controlled by the business community, and poured millions of dollars into their operations. By buying up properties which often had been affordable to poor people, and converting them into residences for upper class residents, gentrification is taking place. As is usual, no provisions have been made for alternate homes for those displaced.

Although the author obviously believes in the immorality of the actions taken by 3CDC, she does not intrude with that view, and simply presents the facts. This is both the story of change and gentrification in a Cincinnati neighborhood, and also a generic story of gentrification as it occurs in many big cities. The title of the book describes the results. The moral is: in America, you had better not be poor.

moral conflict

This book details efforts by communities to rid their economic centers from the underclass - a term in common usage but explained by Alice Skirtz. Her thirty plus years working to aid the underclass is being undone practically nation-wide as legislative methods force the relocation of service, housing, and food for the poor to either exclude them entirely from a community or locate them in a specific area that nearly makes them invisible to the majority of the community. The effort is economic in more than one way. On the one hand it is meant to enhance the cities and make them more attractive by ridding them of beggars, panhandlers, and groups of impoverished people from parks - like Washington Park - and centers of business. I can see what she describes as happening in my own community as some of the very legislation she describes has been passed and enforced here in Anchorage, Alaska. Alice hopes that by bringing this effort to light she can impress enough of a readership to realize the immoral nature of this econocide and reverse it. But there is a presumption in her book, and clearly in her lifelong commitment in that she accepts the view that leads to what William Voegeli describes in his book Never Enough: America's Limitless Welfare State and that is the self-satisfaction many have as they work for programs to help the underclass. What needs to be examined is the success these programs have. This also harks back to Charles Murray's book Losing Ground: American Social Policy, 1950-1980, 10th Anniversary Edition which details the failure of State sponsored welfare programs that years ago detailed the sort of movements - not in all respects described by Alice - but that none the less are the inspiration behind what Alice dubs econocide to stress the immoral nature of what is happening. I also would refer to Government against Itself: Public Union Power and Its Consequences by Daniel DiSalvo as a book that details the economic necessity of decreasing the cost of government to avoid the coming bankruptcies - as we see with the City of Detroit. Here we have two moral issues at stake. On the one hand we have a moral duty to help the poor - the underclass. On the other hand we have a moral duty to enable urban centers and government in general to thrive or the numbers of the underclass dramatically increase. Somehow we have to do both. Another book that shows the travesty of econocide is Place, Not Race: A New Vision of Opportunity in America which details the difference of how wealthy are treated compared to the underclass.

It was fairly helpful although woefully incomplete considering the vast number of wildlife we observed that were not represented in this book. We eagerly await Ken Behrens book on the subject, which is due to be released soon. If you are considering the Bradt Guide, I recommend you check to see if Ken's book is out and get that instead. Ken's "Seawatching" is such a fabulous book, I know his new Guide to Madagascar Wildlife will be indispensable. I only wish it had been available for our trip.

Purchased this book for upcoming trip to Madagascar and to be used as a reference book. There are wonderful color pictures and maps included in the book and it is small enough to carry in luggage without adding too much weight.

It is very descritive about the various animals and retiles. It is strictly a reference guide to the various unique things living in Madagascar. Lovely photographs.

a math classic

This is a very interesting paperback book from Dover on arithmetic. It has fractions, division, square roots, the usual math stuff. But it also has world problems, like mixtures and percents that can still be applied in today's world. Dr. Klaf has written several other books that are equally interesting.

Have you ever blanked out when someone asked you a simple arithmetic question? Yeah, you know what I'm talking about.
This book is aimed at adults who have forgotten much of the basic arithmetic taught in school. It starts with the basics: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and then ranges over a variety of topics (business and financial calculations, percentages, charts, angle measurements, logarithms, mixtures and solutions, averages, etc.).
It contains over 800 problems, easy-to-follow questions and answers in a question and answer style.
If you are returning to school, or have school aged children (and need to help with homework) this book can help to jog your memory.
