Better than Definitely Dead...
By CoffeeGurl
I wasn't exactly thrilled with Definitely Dead, since it felt as though Harris was trying to cram in all of the characters and subplots into two-hundred-something pages. I also didn't like the totally lame twists regarding Bill. I thought it was a little too convenient for my taste. So, I wondered if the series had jumped the shark and if I should read the next book. All Together Dead, while not as good as Dead to the World, my favorite Sookie book so far, was far more enjoyable than its predecessor. It was time for the vampire summit, and Sookie, our adorable telepathic heroine, under orders from Eric and Sophie-Anne, the Queen of Louisiana, is forced to attend. In addition to Eric and the queen, Sookie would join boyfriend weretiger Quinn and vampire ex-boyfriend Bill. Sookie also reunites with Barry the Bellboy, a fellow telepath introduced in Living Dead in Dallas. The summit, aside from parties and business conventions, would also feature a few criminal trials, one of which is the queen's trial for the murder of her husband (Definitely Dead). But, as expected when vampires get together, strange things begin to occur. Vampires turn out dead. The murders seem to be connected with the queen's trial. But soon bigger threats arise, and it is up to Sookie and Barry the Bellboy to figure out what is going on. There are some twists throughout the novel.

When the action began, the novel was quite riveting. I liked some of the twists that went on toward the end as well. I also liked the inner conflicts Sookie was encountering. She has reached a point where she doesn't know if her life will ever be normal again. Her connection with the vampires become more integral in this installment, and I think that Harris foreshadows Sookie's descent from having a fairly average life to one solely centered on the supernaturals around her. Other than those good points, I thought the novel was all over the place. There was little resolution regarding Sookie and the men in her life. She cares for Quinn, and she likes that he seems more normal than the vampires, but she doesn't know if she loves him. She also doesn't know how she feels for Eric. And she has unresolved issues with Bill, whom she still resents for having lied to her. (On a good note, it appears that Bill shows genuine remorse for everything he had done to her. Come on, Sookie, the guy's sorry! Sookie is being petty and downright childish when it comes to him. I wonder for how much longer the author will drag this on.) There is little interaction with Quinn and Eric -- the latter of whom is very sexy in this installment. If she were to choose between these two men, I'd like for her to choose Eric. (But, to be honest, I still prefer Bill.) However, I believe the journey is better than the destination, so I don't mind more romantic tension between her and Eric and Bill (more with the latter please!). Quinn is a little more developed here, but I don't like him much. I tried to, but I can't picture a bald-headed, olive-skinned, beefy guy without picturing a pro wrestler or Mr. Clean. I also hate his annoying habit of addressing Sookie as "babe." Going back to Sookie and Bill, there is no closure between them. Bill was just sort of there, making brief appearances throughout the novel. He went from a strong lead to sort of a filler character, and I'm not happy with that. Secondary characters are thrown in and out without much purpose. (I did like the scene where Pam talks about her past though.) Even though I like the simple scenes of Sookie working at the bar or interacting with her small town buddies, those scenes in this book seemed forced. All in all, All Together Dead is rushed and uneven. Charlaine Harris should really forget about the small characters and concentrate on Sookie and the main characters. She tries to do too much in a limited amount of pages. I give this novel four stars because it was entertaining nevertheless and there were some hilarious passages. I especially enjoyed the scenes with roommate Amelia and her cat/boyfriend Bob. The Southern Vampire Mysteries is still worth reading, but Harris should do one of the following two things: either do a little house-cleaning with the characters and subplots, or consider making the future novels longer. So it may be time to get her publisher to increase her word count limit.

Walk Like An Egyptian. Or a Britlingen.
By Debra Morse
In this, the seventh installment of Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire series, we enter an expanded world. Heroine Sookie Stackhouse has grown from being mere barmaid in a small town to being telepathic aide-de-camp to Queen Sophie of Louisiana at a summit of vamps and others in the city of Rhodes. The situs of the convention, the Hotel Gizeh, bears a striking resemblance to the Luxor in Las Vegas which, when combined with the vampire patronized Anubis Airlines, adds a nice undead Egyptian touch.

However, Sophie Anne arrives at the meeting somewhat depleted. Hurricane Katrina has ravaged her queendom, killing many of her subjects and doing untold property damage. Additionally, she is charged with the murder of her husband, and Sookie alone is witness to the facts that can exonerate her at the upcoming trial. Underlings vie for position, rivals plot overthrows, and potential suitors connive for a powerful alliance. In other words, your typical regional professional meeting.

Mix in Sookie's growing romance with were-tiger Quinn (grrrowl!), political intrigue and power plays, otherworldly bodyguards known as the Britlingens, and a cast of new characters representing vampire royalty from all over the U.S., and you have a wonderful fresh tale. I marvel at the imagination of Harris as she plucks new beings and social systems from out of seeming thin air and breaths life into them with absolute believability and skill.

This is a transitional novel, and as such some of the dramatic tension of the earlier books is replaced with laying the foundation for what promises to be a dynamite next chapter in this exciting and ever-entertaining series. Why does the cover art show Sookie clinging to Eric as they fly on an obviously preoccupied coffin? Well I'll let you find that out on your own.

OK, Maybe Seven is Just An Unlucky Number
By ChefCheyanne
I admit I'm part of the problem--I refused to read this series for WAY too long because I thought the name Sookie was too stupid for a character.

Wrong about that--Sookie is perfectly written as the Southern blue-collar worker she is by someone who knows this area and people. So much of the author's work is dead-on perfect--says THIS escaped rural Southener--like needing a flashlight to walk down a country road because there is no light--at all! You need to have been there/done that to respect what a perfect detail that is to include. But I felt sorry for Sookie during this entire story. She is not being treated well by her paranormal associates and this gal needs a break! From the moment her hare-brained brother gets married in a ceremony with potentially serious consequences for Sookie to being pushed around by vamp politics, I wanted something nice to happen. She's starting to seem like a victim and I'm worried about her future. From a novel I read for fun and relaxation--I don't need that kind of trouble.

The Ecological Approach To Visual Perception, by James J. Gibson

This is a book about how we see: the environment around us (its surfaces, their layout, and their colors and textures); where we are in the environment; whether or not we are moving and, if we are, where we are going; what things are good for; how to do things (to thread a needle or drive an automobile); or why things look as they do.

The basic assumption is that vision depends on the eye which is connected to the brain. The author suggests that natural vision depends on the eyes in the head on a body supported by the ground, the brain being only the central organ of a complete visual system. When no constraints are put on the visual system, people look around, walk up to something interesting and move around it so as to see it from all sides, and go from one vista to another. That is natural vision -- and what this book is about.

About the Author

James J. Gibson (1904–1979) is one of the most important psychologists of the 20th century, best known for his work on visual perception. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton University and his first major work was The Perception of the Visual World (1950) in which he rejected behaviorism for a view based on his own experimental work.

In his later works, including The Ecological Approach to Visual Perception (1979), Gibson became more philosophical and criticized cognitivism in the same way he had attacked behaviorism before, arguing strongly in favor of direct perception and direct realism, as opposed to cognitivist indirect realism. He termed his new approach "ecological psychology".

Gibson’s legacy is increasingly influential on many contemporary movements in psychology, particularly those considered to be post-cognitivist.

Providing a framework to help researchers think about perception: "The more it changes, the more it is the same thing."
By Wangdo Kim
We cannot change it. Why has man changed the shapes and substances of his environment? To change what it affords him. He has made more available what benefits him and less pressing what injures him. In making life easier for himself, of course, he has made life harder for most of the other animals. We all fit into the substructures of the environment in our various ways, for we were all, in fact, formed by them. We were created by the world we live in.

Gibson said that if what we perceived were the entities of physics and mathematics, meaning would have to be imposed on them. But if what we perceived are the entities of environment science, their meaning can be discovered. He has conceived "the theory of affordances". He has described the environment as the surfaces that separate substances from the medium in which the animals live. But he has also described what the environment affords animals, mentioning the terrain, shelters, water, fire, objects, tool, other animals, and human displays. The import question is how do we go from surfaces to affordance? A radical hypothesis implies that the values and meanings of things in the environment can be directly perceived, moreover, it would explain the sense in which values and meaning are external to the perceiver.

The advantage to the theory of perception to be derived from a study of this affordance is apparent at every step. We may in our perception-action coupling space conceive quadratic forms like those of the conics, follow Joachimsthal's equation, in connection with maximization and minimization problem in motor control, and observed that if we adopt the fertile method of investigation introduced by Joachimsthal, an equilibrium equation of locomotion and manipulation arose in connection with the determination of existence of quadratic function.

Excellent content, but the pages are falling out
By Kevin
I'm a graduate student in vision science and find the content of this book very interesting. My complaint is with the actual, physical book - the pages are barely bound and many are falling out as I read it. I've read parts 1 and 2 of the book and of the 69 pages (138/2) in these sections, 15 have become unbound. The book arrived less than 2 weeks ago, so this is not a wear and tear issue (see photo)

The Tumbleweed Society: Working and Caring in an Age of Insecurity, by Allison J. Pugh

Today we live in a society in which relationships, social ties, and jobs seem to change constantly. People roll this way and that, like tumbleweeds blown across an arid plain. Yet we know little about the broader impact of job insecurity and uncertainty in our lives.

In The Tumbleweed Society, Allison Pugh offers a moving exploration of sacrifice, betrayal, defiance, and resignation, as people adapt to insecurity with their own negotiations of commitment on the job and in intimate life. When people no longer expect commitment from their employers, how do they think about their own obligations? How do we raise children, put down roots in our communities, and live up to our promises at a time when flexibility and job insecurity reign?

Based on eighty in-depth interviews with parents who vary in their experiences of job insecurity and socio-economic status, Pugh finds that most people accept job insecurity as inevitable, even as many maintain high standards for their own dedication: a "one-way honor system" in which workers are beholden but employers are not. But while many seem to either embrace or resign themselves to insecurity at work, they try to hold off that insecurity from infiltrating their home lives. Erecting a "moral wall" to corral the maelstrom at work, however, comes with a price. Placing nearly all of their hopes for enduring connections on their intimate relationships, she argues, can place intolerable stress on their intimate lives, often sparking the very instability they long to avoid.

By shining a light on how we ourselves adapt-and prepare our children-for the new environment of uncertainty, Allison Pugh gives us a finely detailed portrait of what commitment and obligation mean today.

Review

"The Tumbleweed Society offers a subtle, brilliant look at how people craft a sense of ethical purpose in an era of laissez-faire institutions, where the community has little to offer and financial security can vanish overnight. It's also a riveting read, rich with fascinating human stories." --Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Bright-Sided and Nickel and Dimed

"The Tumbleweed Society provides a fascinating and original account of the ways that work insecurity seeps into the family lives of the millions of Americans who can no longer count on stable employment." --Andrew Cherlin, Professor of Sociology and Public Policy, Johns Hopkins University

"Does the end of the lifelong, one-company career in America just affect work? Or does it, as Allison Pugh asks in this brilliantly illuminating book, influence how we address the possibility of grievous disappointment in intimate life too? Do we hedge our bets in love and work, or trustingly sacrifice in one or both realms, and risk feeling betrayed when a contract turns out to be 'unrequited'? The reader will find eye-opening answers on this central issue of our age." --Arlie Hochschild, author of The Outsourced Self and So How's the Family?

"The rise in precarious work during the past three decades has produced dramatic changes in both work and family life. But people have adapted to insecurity differently, depending on whether they are stably employed, have been laid off, or had to relocate. The Tumbleweed Society vividly describes the diversity of experiences that characterize the new era of precarity through the voices of those who have experienced a variety of work arrangements and family formations." --Arne L. Kalleberg, Kenan Distinguished Professor of Sociology, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

"Sociologist Pugh tries to connect the "two whirlwinds" of job insecurity and marital insecurity. She interviewed 88 parents of teenagers, mostly women, representing highly educated job changers, moderately educated job losers, and the moderately educated stably employed. Those at the top have the privilege of choice, riding the fluid economy for better opportunities. At the same time, they build a "moral wall" of stability around their marriages." --Choice

Untangling the "knots of duty"
By E.M. Bristol
"The Tumbleweed Society: Working and Caring in an Age of Insecurity," explores how both people with no job security and those with relative security cope in both their personal and professional lives. Author Allison J. Pugh interviewed eighty parents: 33 of whom experienced layoffs; 32 who are currently in stable professions; and 20 who had to move as a result of theirs' or their spouse's job being relocated. (There was category overlap with some of the subjects.) The subjects are described as "mostly white women with some college," but there are men and people of color interviewed, as well. The subjects came from the Washington, D.C. area, as well as Virginia and two large coastal cities. Their thoughts on the subject are interwoven with insights from the author on the current state of American society.

The author found that there is a marked difference (unsurprisingly) between how people with job security and people without it view their jobs, and by extension, their personal lives. Those who fall in the latter category, for example, tend to have what she calls a "one way honor system," meaning that they hold themselves professionally lo certain standards while expecting nothing in the way of job stability from their employers. In contrast, people with relative job security often maintain a pragmatic approach to their marriages and families, being willing to "settle" for a less than ideal situation. Interestingly, people who experience little job security, can wind up pushing themselves to what many would consider heroic standards to care for their family members. At the same time, however, even people with very little job security can and do make decisions in their personal lives that put them in the position of doing the choosing. (One woman interviewed who had had money troubles with her first husband, decided after her second marriage, to keep separate financial accounts.)

The author also examines the way people describe their professional and personal lives, including the use of humor. My own conclusion was that humor is simply more socially acceptable in the US when it comes to discussing such sensitive subjects with a stranger than "whining" about one's problems, but the author puts this all a lot more sophisticatedly than I could.

As the author points out, other countries have done a better job of addressing the current, instable global economy and its impact on their citizens. However, the United States (in the author's opinion) is lagging far behind. In the afterword, Pugh states that it would be helpful to the people currently adrift in this "tumbleweed society" to have a conversation about what employers and employees owe each other. This book goes a long way to getting such a conversation started.

Five stars for insight; four for execution. There seemed to be some repetition, and at times, I found it easy to lose the thread of what was being discussed. However, "The Tumbleweed Society," is overall a thought-provoking read about a timely topic.

A vital examination of how job insecurity affects intimacy, worker loyalty, and our communities
By Kcorn
Many employees are all too familiar with the stresses of job insecurity, desperately scrambling to find work after being laid off or their company downsizes. Others are in stable jobs - and then there are those who aren't sure whether their "stable" jobs are really all that secure. Some move from one city to another, depending on the demands of their employers.

Sociologist Allison Pugh looks at all of these groups. She doesn't just cite the statistics on the unemployed and the under-employed but instead focuses on how work anxieties affect family life, intimacy, loyalty to jobs, and more. This is an impressive study which deserves a wide readership. She provides plenty of evidence that unemployment and unstable jobs affect not only individuals but our communities and sense of connection to one another.

In the course of writing this book, Pugh interviewed individuals from four groups: those who experienced layoffs, those who moved to get a new job (and were generally anxious about holding those jobs), those employed in stable jobs, and those whose employers asked them to relocate. She didn't speak with a large number of people - only 80 individuals - but she supplemented the results with an extensive number of studies and other material. This is listed in a detailed bibliography at the back of the book and there are also notes on each chapter.

While I've tried to highlight the larger themes in The Tumbleweed Society, there are far more related issues than I can cover here - at least without writing an extremely long review. I was particularly drawn to the chapter which centered on how job insecurity affects parenting. Highly recommended.

The New Reality of Workers Without Rights and Employers Who Have No Obligation
By Lynn Ellingwood
An amazing sociological work which I suspect might go mainstream or be a lasting work of modern Sociology. Allison J. Pugh studied how the nature of work has changed drastically in the last 30 years. Americans can no longer expect long term employment with one company or the public sector and are forced to look for work every few years, bringing down wages, retirement saving and the social contract that was often connected to employment in this country. Instead people may work as temps in large corporations with no benefits, have irregular work hours and be pressed to be available for work at all times. Children see little of their parents, marriages are stressed and the quality of care they receive can be haphazardly put together. Parents could use people they normally wouldn't as child care or begin or stay in relationships because they need child care. The book is effective in showing how many people whose lives are on the edge of poverty or have already fallen in. Great work.

By Mocha Man
Scientific writing (other than for news media accessible to the public) is often accused of being stiff and boring, and probably to most students lacking in a good narrative. I'm happy to report that Marc Klowden's is an excellent narrative writer about a topic that can be quite dense. I noticed this high quality of writing in edition 2 of his book and it continues in edition 3. I started teaching graduate level insect physiology using his edition 2 but then in the next round decided to try the revision by multiple author's of Chapman's famous text, Insects Structure & Function. I went back to Klowden because I think it presents a highly focused narrative in one voice as opposed to the "all over the place" feeling I got from reading Chapman. Marc Klowden has retired now, but I hope he continues writing. I recommend this text for any biology program needing an insect physiology text.

Physiological Systems In Insects is great!
By Aristotle Dipteron
Klowden has crafted a book that is very reader-friendly for learning the complexities of insect physiology. Current molecular biology is woven into traditional insect physiology. Everything is carefully explained. The many charts/diagrams are very helpful. This is not casual reading, but is good reading for a person wanting to learn about insect physiology. I highly recommend it!

'Kama Sutra' continues to have relevance
By Rae A. Francoeur
How little has changed in 2,000 years. The new translation of "Kama Sutra" 2 millennia after Vatsyayana wrote it is of great interest for many reasons, not the least of which is its description of the roles that men and women played in relation to one another in India. Our sexual behaviors, our division of labor with regard to gender, our vanities and jealousies -- and the need to manage these -- are all resoundingly familiar even in this new and wondrous millennium that bears little resemblance to Vatsyayana's world. Or so we might have assumed.

Penguin has released, in time for Valentine's Day, a very handsome paperback edition of "Kama Sutra" translated by A.N.D. Haksar. The sexy cover (pull out both flaps to get the full effect) by Malika Favre is clever, lively and tongue in cheek. This is the only time you'll encounter the sexual positions that have become synonymous with this book, though this time the positions serve double-duty. The rest is up to the reader to figure out.

There are seven books within "Kama Sutra," and only chapter two, Sexual Union, gets specific about the methods of lovemaking. There are a lot of variables involved in getting to the actual union. And there are eight parts of sexual union (embracing, kissing, scratching, biting, coition, moaning, reversing roles and oral sex) and the eight varieties of each of those. The other books in "Kama Sutra" deal with winning a wife and her slow seduction (for she is likely a virgin), the first or only wife, the complexities of the man's other wives, the courtesan and "esoteric matters" including attractiveness and revival of passion.

It is interesting to note that little is known about the author. He studied, observed and wrote while living a "celibate's life in full meditation." He was most likely from Madhya Desha, considered the cultural heartland of India at the time. He created a book of manners, with prescribed behaviors even for times when a woman has no choice but to act upon her jealousies or when a man wants to mark a woman with his bite. Note, as well, that whatever he does to her, she can do to him in return -- with twice the vigor.

This book does have a place in our current literature and it can continue to inform our thinking about sexuality. It's based on the basics of arousal and copulation and nothing much has changed in that regard. In the traditional roles of man and woman, a man has certain duties to perform and, in turn, a woman plays her own provocative role. Anyone reading Jamie Bufalino's weekly column, "Get Naked," in the magazine Time Out New York, will hear echoes of "Kama Sutra" every week. Bufalino might even have a copy in his back pocket.

Kama Sutra from a sacred perspective, interesting and worthy to read
By Luis Cabrera
Kama Sutra from a sacred perspective, interesting and worthy to read. I like this book and I learned a great deal of things related to sexual abilities before bed, and on the way to it. Understanding women thinking way through their acting and speaking way. The book is really good, sorry for those who are only looking for images, and detailed explanations related to sex and positions. The book has all that, but we have to get the whole picture. Recommend it.

From Library Journal
De Waal, author of several works of Benedictine spirituality, shares with the reader her own seven-day retreat using the writings and photographs of Thomas Merton as guide. De Waal has chosen judiciously from Merton and offers the enhancement of her own reflection on themes of God's call, human response, the true self, encounter with Christ, the demands of love (or finding God in other people), the ordinary (or finding God in nature), and integrating the retreat. Merton's themes of solitude and responsible concern for others come through clearly, as do De Waal's call for lived spirituality. This book makes an excellent guide for retreat or personal reflection. Highly recommended for seminary and public libraries.

A life changer
By Angela
I attended a week long retreat where we used this book as a guide. I am not a very religious person at all, but this book changed my life. Merton challenges us to die to our false selves, to open our hearts to God and to accept contemplation of the mystery of God and his creations as the center of our lives. As an introduction to Merton and as a daily spiritual guide, this book is priceless.

Helpful meditation-retreat for going into the heart with God...
By Peter Menkin
Today, again, I asked myself during centering prayer, to let my heart be open to God. This is the Christocentric God of the Trinity about which I speak. The book, "A Seven Day Journey with Thomas Merton" by Esther de Waal is an excellent exercise for home retreat that helps one come to opening the heart to God. The book does so in words, and it has photographs by Thomas Merton.

Irregardless, through the words or by looking at the photographs, one can find a way of looking at the world in the everyday and finding God. Set out as a seven day journey, take the book kindly and give it attention during the day, setting aside the time to go into the retreat. In the notes on Thomas Merton, the writer says, "The message of love, the primacy of love, this is the most basic definition of monastic life as Merton discovered it..." Thomas Merton was a man who lived a life of love, learning so much about it and Esther de Waal, a Benedictine, is a good person to help us along the way with this love that Thomas Merton knew.

She asks questions in the days of the retreat. In day one, she asks, "Who am I before God at this point in my life?" She goes on in an intimate way, teaching us to become intimate with God: "...I am overawed to think of the person that I am, that unique person, so lovingly created by God in all the fullness and riches of my own individuality, a person made to be His daughter, His son." Is this too close for some readers (what I think is these are starting points for considerations). So, as to being too close, I think not; the book is personal. If the reader has a starting point of relationship with God, and is not afraid to explore both the sensitive and open areas of relationships, he or she will find these more meaningful statements as time goes on. This is a book to be used more than once, is what becomes apparent.

Another thing this book helps with is the way of contemplation. As she quotes Thomas Merton, using his poetry throughout the book, we have a guide to help us in our spiritual exercise and quest. On "Day Three--The Solitary Within: The True Self" Merton is quoted: "What can we gain by sailing to the moon if we are not able to cross the abyss that separates us from ourselves?" From Psalm 139 she quotes a response for this retreat exercise. "For it was you who created my being/knit me together in my mother's womb/I thank you for the wonder of my being,/for the wonders of all your creation."

"Day Four--Encounter With Christ" is the fourth day, and the central day of the retreat. Remember, this book is a retreat for seven days read a chapter at a time, day by day. The great gift Merton offers readers is a sharing of his experience in contemplation, his spiritual journey, and mostly his coming to know God. The book is kept under the section of books for "Spirituality/Prayer" and those interested will find that they too are with "..the Christ of God who in the spirit of his love lives in the people of God..." This is a book that is open to the reader, and open to people who are seekers of God who desire to pray. This is a prayerful book, need I say.

How religious is this book? I ask the question so that you as a reader will know that this is a book that is approachable. It "answers" the statement by John Cassian, in his "Conferences" which I am now reading about the relationship with God that a seeker may look for in his life. Even the advanced who are spiritually inclined will find this an approachable book by this measure of Cassian's: "...We ought to know where we should fix our mind's attention and to what goal we should always recall our soul's gaze." That can be an advanced question for many of us, and this book is helpful in meeting the statement's intent for one's life. This is a book that has life moving possibilities, one step at a time.

I would be missing a significant aspect of this book if I did not mention the photographs by Thomas Merton. One can say that one has seen his photographs, if one reads this book. Something worthwhile for an educated person in the 21st century. If you are a reader of the journal "Weavings" you may come to Thomas Merton's photographs better prepared for seeing the contemplative in everyday things. The Journal is a quarterly series of articles from Upper Room publications on such topics. "A Seven Day Journey with Thomas Merton" does a comprehensive job of helping one to see. Thomas Merton sees things in his world, and one must look at the photographs and then make the connection with the common things of ones world and life. That for me is a good entry point of understanding these photographs in a book that is a retreat.

A commentary on Thomas Merton by a woman who is well prepared and able to make such commentary, essentially this book is her interpretation of Merton's writings set as a retreat for people at home or use in a retreat setting away from home. With a foreword by Henri Nouwen, and photographs by Thomas Merton (including a most intriguing one of him next to a cross -- large, large one) on the cover, the title by Esther de Waal is published by Servant Publications of Ann Arbor, Michigan. I listened to a webcast some years ago, from Trinity Church in New York if memory is correct, when a woman editor with Publisher's Weekly said that one of the things that competed with Church life was good reading -- in other words books. This is one of those books that can compete with a retreat time away from home, and for me that was the value of it. I could have the book at home, use it for study and prayer on a seven day course and come closer to God in my relationship with Him by the book. This book is a good thing in the world.

More nourishing some days than others
By Mr. D. P. Jay
I once took a book by Merton on retreat, having heard so many sermons praising his insights. It was a big disappointment. Merton seems, for me, at is best when talking about social justice issues. Otherwise, his piety is too intense for me.

This book is designed for someone who cannot afford the time or money to go away on retreat. It is meant to provide enough food for thought and meditation for use at home. It succeeds in doing that, though some days are more nourishing than others.

One of the best insights, which we need to remind ourselves over and over again, is that we are called to be ourselves, not someone else. Also, the desire to please God does in fact please God and that `All we need is to experience what we already possess'. `Without some sort of solitude there is and can be no maturity' and we need `to be converted over again each hour.'

Great addiction resource
By Ashley S.
My recovering alcoholic loves this book. I bought this for him to meditate daily and he does. He also said this book is used in his AA meetings. He keeps it in his glove compartment to pull out when ever needed. Each day includes a prayer and gives you some thoughts for the day.

A Daily Guidebook For Sobriety.
By farmboyWI
This book is not AA-conference approved, but is read at many AA meetings. A bit more religious than the Daily Reflections, it includes a thought, meditation and prayer for the day.
