About the Author
Eric Ambler was born into a family of entertainers and in his early years helped out as a puppeteer. However, he initially chose engineering as a full time career, although this quickly gave way to writing. In World War II he entered the army and looked likely to fight in the line, but was soon after commissioned and ended the war as assistant director of the army film unit and a Lieutenant-Colonel. This experience translated into civilian life and Ambler had a very successful career as a screen writer, receiving an Academy Award for his work on The Cruel Sea by Nicolas Monsarrat in 1953. Many of his own works have been filmed, the most famous probably being Light of Day, filmed as Topkapi under which title it is now published. He established a reputation as a thriller writer of extraordinary depth and originality and received many other accolades during his lifetime, including two Edgar Awards from The Mystery Writers of America (best novel for Topkapi and best biographical work for Here Lies Eric Ambler), and two Gold Dagger Awards from the Crime Writer's Association (Passage of Arms and The Levanter). Often credited as being the inventor of the modern political thriller, John Le Carre once described Ambler as 'the source on which we all draw.' A recurring theme in his works is the success of the well meaning yet somewhat bungling amateur who triumphs in the face of both adversity and hardened professionals. Ambler wrote under his own name and also during the 1950's a series of novels as Eliot Reed, with Charles Rhodda. These are now published under the 'Ambler' umbrella.

Fun.

Good fun. Not as complex as Judgment on Deltchev or as evocative of a past time as many early Ambler books, and the love story is pale compared to A Kind of Anger, but written with characteristic wit and panache.

Ambler in decline?

Unfortunately, Mr.Eric Ambler's late-career novel 'Charter to Danger'
lacks the crisp plotting and surprising plot twists of earlier examples of his
pre-war work like 'A Coffin for Dimitrios' (1939) or his delightful post-war
heist novel 'The Light of Day' (1962). The latter was made into a film with Peter
Ustinov as the hapless anti-hero Arthur Abdel Simpsom that is well worth watching.
As a fan of Mr. Ambler who has read his novels over and over again, I found this
particular book's plotting to be mechanical and rather insipid. While one finds
oneself in sympathy with the staunchly upright hero, this book is, quite frankly,
dull, boring and contrived. I hope that the next book of his that I'm about to
read, 'The Levanter', will prove to be a better example of his craft.
In sum, this book was disappointing.

About the Author
Gabriel L. Negretto (Bahía Blanca, Buenos Aires, Argentina) is Professor of Political Science at the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE), located in Mexico City. He holds a law degree from the University of Buenos Aires, and both a Master of International Affairs with specialization in Latin American Studies and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University. Negretto has been visiting fellow and associate professor at the University of Notre Dame, Princeton University, The New School for Social Research, Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, and Columbia University. He has published numerous articles on political institutions, institutional design, and constitutional change in American, European, and Latin American academic journals such as the Journal of Politics, the British Journal of Political Science, Comparative Political Studies, the Law and Society Review, Latin American Politics and Society, the Journal of Latin American Studies, Government and Opposition, and Desarrollo Económico. A major contribution

In this book, Negretto makes an important contribution to the study of the endogenous causes of institutional design. The book develops a two-level theory to explain the adoption of constitutional rules regarding presidential election (and re-election) and presidential powers in 18 Latin American countries between 1900 and 2008. The two-level theory underscores that not only partisan interests, but also cooperative goals guide the behavior of political elites during the process of constitutional change.

A rigorous and inspiring book

In this book, Gabriel Negretto makes a valuable contribution to the study of constitutions and to the theory of institutional change.

From a theoretical point of view, Negretto’s theory sets a new standard in the literature by offering a general, deductive and consistent theory of constitutional change. Furthermore, the book contributes to a recent agenda in contemporary Political Science: the study of institutions in contexts of institutional weakness. This agenda attacks a usual assumption among students of formal institutions, i.e., that these produce the same effects regardless of the context in which they are embedded. In a similar vein, the author demonstrates that, in contexts of institutional weakness, those institutions that are reputed to be highly stable in institutionalized environments can –and actually happen to be– quite unstable. The argument nicely combines intuitions both from historical institutionalism and rational choice theory: Negretto shows how critical junctures shape the set of options that political actors face and, at the same time, how constitutional change is a consequence of the instrumental preferences of political actors aiming at their own political survival.

From a methodological point of view, the book exemplifies the state of the discipline by making a proficient use of the so-called mixed methods. It successfully combines quantitative analysis with rigorous, in-depth, qualitative case studies of four major instances of constitutional change: Colombia (1991), Ecuador (1998), and Argentina (1949 and 1994).

As a graduate student of Political Science I found the book most inspiring and useful, at least for two reasons. First, it showed me how solid theoretical arguments can be empirically tested in a way that tells us something about reality without falling in the temptation of intricate modelling – what Jon Elster has called “hard obscurantism”. Second, it provided nice intuitions that could be eventually applied to my own research agenda about subnational politics in Argentina. For these reasons, I strongly recommend this book to students of political institutions and, more in general, to anyone interested in Latin American politics.

A groundbreaking research on institutional change

"Making Constitutions" provides a useful and comprehensive perspective on current discussions of the New Institutionalism, that everyone interested in Latin-American politics and political institutions will find appealing. Negretto goes beyond the traditional logic of New Institutionalist logic, developing better accounts of institutional origin and change by the addition of historical and contextual elements, and the adoption of an endogenous perspective of institutions.

Negretto stresses the dual nature of constitutions: as cooperative structures and as power structures, differing from authors that consider only one of the two dimensions to explain constitutional change in Latin America. Instead, Negretto offers a comprehensive model to address the institutional changes that have been studied in isolation.

As a PhD Student of Public Policy, I found this book to be very useful to understand the dynamics of institutional change from an innovative point of view, whose scope may be extended beyond the topics studied by the author; for example, to the analysis of administrative reforms, such as civil service laws, or bureaucracy controls. Similarly, the model can be useful to assess relationships between national and subnational governments.

Students who read this book will encounter a very illustrative example of the rigorous use of mixed methods technique: Negretto offers a tidy analysis of constitutional change in Latin America, profusely explaining case selection, how he builds the variables, and why he opts for a complementary strategy, in such a way that even those who are not very involved with the literature of institutional change may enjoy the reading of this book and find it appealing.

About the Author

Stanley C. Plog. The career of Stanley C. Plog spans the worlds of academia, professional consulting, and business development. He founded Plog Research, Inc. and was its Chairman and CEO. The company serves a broad segment of the travel industry throughout the world, including airlines, hotel chains, destinations, cruise lines, rental car companies, and travel media. At UCLA, he was first the academic director of the Training Program in Social Psychiatry and formed the Urban Observatory, a social problems study center.

The popular press has labeled him "Dr. Destination" for his ability to turn around destinations and resort areas that face declining revenues. His accomplishments include helping rejuvenate troubled airlines, cruise lines, hotel groups, and other travel-related companies. He frequently speaks at major travel conferences worldwide, and is a regular contributor to ASTA Agency Management, Travel Weekly, and other trade publications. Dr. Plog is also an editor for the Journal of Travel Research and the Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly. He has written two other books on travel (Leisure Travel: Making it a Growth Market ...Again!, and Vacation Places Rated). Currently, he operates as an independent consultant, continues to assist his previous company (now owned by NFO Worldwide), services an online research company (Equation Research), and provides guidance to destinations and travel suppliers.

This book provides a different perspective on travel, based on the more than 35 years that I served virtually all aspects of the industry as a consultant and researcher. Major airlines, hotel chains, cruise lines, tour operators, rental car companies, resorts and destinations, travel media, and large travel agency conglomerates have been clients. These experiences provide an overview of the industry that I could not get if I had worked only in one segment, such as the airlines, hotels, or as a director of a tourism bureau. The range of experiences has allowed me to see similarities and differences across the field that otherwise would not have been possible. It has been a wonderful life experience and, to use the term of the psychologist Carl Rogers, I have felt selffulfilled. I count as personal friends many people I met over the years, including clients, academicians, people in the press, executives in advertising agencies, and others. They have taught me much while giving freely of their time and their ideas as we worked jointly to solve problems or work through issues.

My views may be different or unique, but they grow out of trying to understand how to attack each situation in the hundreds of studies that I have personally conducted. The focus has been on trying to learn why people travel, why they don't, and how to understand the psychology and subtleties of the travel experience. To handle the new challenges that clients provided almost weekly, flexibility and open-mindedness have been qualities that are essential to achieve success. You can't approach any situation assuming that you already know the answers. After the long period that I have been associated with the industry, I am still amazed at how much there is to learn. I cover a lot of topics in the pages that follow, but the subject matter could easily have filled a volume three to four times its current size.

Although this is a marketing book, it focuses primarily on the psychology of travel—why people travel and why they don't, and how to reach and motivate them more effectively. Anyone who wants to capture greater market share must have good knowledge about the motivations, thoughts, and lifestyles of important market segments. Otherwise, advertising and promotional dollars for programs supporting these efforts miss their intended targets. The media-intensive culture of today exposes consumers to thousands of advertising messages daily through television, radio, and print publications. Weak, unfocused messages easily get lost in the clutter.

This is the best book on destination marketing ever written.

As a travel professional with more than 30 years experience of tourism marketing I have never read a better book on destination marketing. Plog uses his more than 40 years of knowledge by mixing telling case studies with marketing theory. Some of the basic principles should be well known to practitioners, particularly the product life cycle of a destination but it is Stanley's use of real world examples which brings the book to life. And to my fellow directors of tourism, just read page 150 and you will immediately understand how knowledgeable Stan is.

From the Author
In the first edition of this book I took you from first steps, without assuming any prior knowledge other than basic HTML (and maybe some CSS), through the use of PHP, MySQL and JavaScript, and along the way pointed out the shortcuts and pitfalls I have discovered, to give you the head start I didn't have. Thankfully the book was extremely well received, and various editions have remained at the top of the web development book charts for over five years. In fact there have been three full editions and some edition updates, as I ensure the book is kept fully up-to-date, and add information on the latest and most current web development technologies.

In the previous two editions I added coverage of CSS, and then HTML5, and now this fourth edition comes with a comprehensive jQuery primer, so you can take your JavaScript programming to the next level. I have also removed all coverage of the outdated mysql extension, and replaced it with the newer and more efficient mysqli. I also updated all the errata and added many reader suggestions. But with so many technologies now in the book, I decided not to keep adding to its title. Instead I've reverted to the original title of Learning PHP, MySQL & JavaScript, and the extra technologies are now mentioned in the subtitle:With jQuery, CSS & HTML5.

So I hope you'll find the book even more of a one-stop resource than ever, and that you also find it easy to read and understand (and enjoyable too). A great reference source for coding PHP, MySQL, JavaScript and jQuery

This is a great book, full of information on current web creation technology, covering modern usage of PHP, MySQL, JavaScript and jQuery. It serves as a good reference book, while at the same time, providing brief examples to illustrate how to use each command or function as it is presented. I found the book easy to read and understand, and the examples clear and to the point. When I first opened this book I considered myself a reasonably proficient PHP and MySQL coder, though I was using these technologies as they existed eight years ago, when I first learned them. The book opened my eyes to the newer tools that are now available as well as more modern approaches to coding, including object-oriented programming and the power of jQuery.

I think this book would serve a beginning coder well, but would be even more valuable to someone who already has some experience under their belt using one or more of these technologies. This book has become my go-to book for any coding or syntax questions, and a good book to just browse through to learn a new trick or two. I recommend it without hesitation to anyone that would like to improve their programming skills in the covered topics.

Lot of good information, but no organization or useful examples

After a couple years of coding HTML, CSS, and Javascript/Jquery, I decided to dive into PHP/MySQL to start building some backend chops. To be fair, I'm comparing this book to Learning Web Design by Jennifer Robbins and Javascript/JQuery: The Missing Manual by David Sawyer McFarland, which I consulted to learn all my front-end knowledge and which have to be two of the most straightforward, well-organized, example-driven books I've ever read. Sadly, Nixon's book didn't have the same great qualities. There's no doubt this guy knows PHP backward and forward. The trouble is that he doesn't really seem to know how to convey that knowledge to a beginner. His writing doesn't seem to have much organization to it- there's a lot of "Hey, PHP can do this, oh and while I'm at it, it can also do this. And by the way, it can also do this, but I'm only showing it to you because you really don't want to do it this way." He also, in my opinion, takes for granted that you already understand how internet databases work, which in my case was a poor assumption. My biggest complaint is the lack of PRACTICAL examples. For every concept he describes, he provides a small, isolated example, but they often don't make sense because you don't understand WHY or in what context he's trying to perform the action he's performing. I'm the kind of guy that really needs to see the bigger picture in order to learn what each detail is contributing to it. And those bigger picture examples just weren't there for me.

All in all, I think the author really knows what he's talking about and probably provides a lot of good information, but as a complete beginner to PHP and back-end programming, I couldn't get any utility out of it. The writing was just too disorganized. This review does not apply to the Javascript section of the book, as I already know how to code JS and didn't read that.
