Set the metronome at a given tempo and read the lines without stopping for mistakes as if you're doing a big band gig etc.

Set aside practice time to work on the lines and work out the fingerings and alternate fingerings etc to enable smoother execution of the lines .

Highly Recommended Jazz Bass Series

Recommending both Book 1 (The Blues in 12 Keys) and Book 2 (Rhythm Changes in 12 Keys) as a pair for building a firm foundation in learning how to play Jazz bass lines:

The 12-bar blues and "Rhythm" changes (coming from "I Got Rhythm") are two of the fundamental building-block progressions in Jazz. Together, they form a basis for understanding much of Jazz. These progressions, or portions of them, are used again-and-again throughout the Jazz repertoire. Yet, it is nice that so many variations are given on the basic A-part of the Rhythm Changes progression, since that is the way it really gets played: not just the same lines repeated over-and-over.

I am particularly pleased that all the examples are completely written-out note-for-note; whereas in many books by other authors, an example will be given in one key with the other keys being left up to the student to figure-out! I always found that to be extremely frustrating.

Writing-out all the bass lines instead of just the chord symbols lets the student learn the actual melodic motion of bass lines in the way that they are really used. The use of scale-type phrases, chromatic lines, occasional wide interval leaps, and rhythmic variations (such as quarter-note triplets and dotted-eighth/sixteenth notes) ...in full context... really puts it all in proper perspective. It shows how those devices are actually used! That's the stuff people learn-from through specific examples! Then once the student becomes familiar with it all and gets the hang of it, he or she should be able to call on these ideas in increasingly improvisational and hence musical ways.

The books will be very useful in learning these specifically important Jazz progressions in every key, which practically every Jazz teacher tells me I should do! Many years of Jazz music-theory training gives me enough insight to recognize that the given examples will be very useful tools in gaining a good grasp of the melodic nature of walking bass lines. Additionally, the appearance and lay-out are comfortable to look-at, which makes it all easier to read; and I like the Jazz fonts!

An Essential Jazz Bassists Book

First of all, the title is a bit of a misnomer. Yes, there are transcriptions of Blues in all twelve keys. The transcriptions are 3 to 5 pages each. But what the beginning to intermediate bassist will find most usefull are the 33 pages, at the beginning of the book, demonstrating the various devices that Jazz Bassists use to construct effective bass lines. The Advanced player will welcome the books interesting exercises to use for keeping the chops up. Steven Moody, the author, guides the reader through exercises including Chromatic Approaches, Dominant 7th Chords, Harmonic anticipation, Voice leading tones, and Tri-Tone Substitution. Mr. Moody's book gives clearly written directions of the various techniques,followed by bass clef progressions that detail the examples. All the examples are interesting and go beyond the usual straight 4 beats to the bar that unfortunately fill up many of the books that I've purchased. I can see that this book will end up as dog-eared and ragged as my copy of Simandl, from repeated use.

A very Comprehensive and Practical Method for beginner and intermediate/advanced bass players

I am highly recommending Steven Mooney's method for Constructing Walking Bass Lines Book I The Blues in 12 Keys, Book II Rhythm Changes in 12 Keys and Book III Standard lines which I purchased mid July and I am eagerly awaiting Book IV. If you can read music a little bit or read TAB, this is the Method for YOU.

Steven's approach is masterly crafted to ensure that you are playing strong Bass Lines right out of the Gate in all Twelve Keys with numerous exercises to reinforce each and every concept whether Theoretically and/or Harmonically in a very Comprehensive and Progressive approach including clearly written directions of the various concepts for the thoroughly written out exercises. As we all know, we all learn by doing. Steven's method provides numerous exercises to keep each and every aspiring Bassist enthuse about Learning and Creating Walking Bass Lines.

I have worked with literally over twenty different method books and Steven Mooney's approach is definitely the best of the best that I have worked with. It is very player friendly throughout and it is masterfully crafted! In addition to a lifetime's work going into creating these books more importantly is the willingness to patiently share this knowledge with others that makes all the difference and Steven should be very, very proud of that accomplishment.

In addition I am truly having the time of my life with these books and I have only just begun!!! So many varied exercises to reinforce the concepts, techniques and sight reading among others!

Moreover, it is a lot of FUN! Steven SHARES the Mysteries of Understanding and Creating Melodic Walking Bass Lines. I personally find it challenging to stay away from his books but I know I should actively be working on Simandl, Ray Brown, Rufus Reid, Harvey Vinson, John Goldsby, Chuck Sher, Ed Friedman, Bunny Brunel, Bob Magnusson, James Jamerson and Jamey Aebersol methods as well!!!

John Nolen (1869–1937) was the first American to identify himself exclusively as a town and city planner. This handsome book seals Nolen’s huge and enduring legacy in large part because of the way it brings its subject matter alive and makes it memorable. Hats off to Bruce Stephenson for honoring one of the nation’s leading pioneers in city planning by producing this well-documented and richly illustrated biography (with over 130 plans, sketches, and photos). It should be required reading for all students of planning, and be in the working libraries of every professional planner.

Fun and silly

We got this from the library and like the pirate book, this is not for educational purposes (dragons, for instance). I read it with my 7 1/2 year-old and we both got a kick out of it. It is completely geared to the boy who wants to pretend, not do a report on pirates. I don't recall seeing anything inappropriate, although I believe feminists may take offense to damsels being rescued so often. To be fair, the book does mention that in our times now, women are much more capable and don't need "rescuing", but they do appreciate nice manners. Perfect for wanting to raise a gentleman, and have a few good chuckles at the same time. Loved it.

A Book of Uneven Quality

In the preface and in the book, Dr. Baggott emphasizes that his intent is to write a rigorous scientific account of human origins (a goal that I find very appealing). For the first seven chapters, which cover the origin and evolution of the universe and the solar system, he does an excellent job towards meeting his goal. The writing is clear and interesting, and the content is detailed and authoritative. His accounts of the interstellar molecular material and the evolution of the solar system are the best that I have read; indeed, it is rare to find any coverage of interstellar molecules in other books. These seven chapters are of five star quality.

Unfortunately the remaining five chapters on the evolution of life are of a lower standard. They are, in general, much less detailed, patchy, and give the impression that the author is in a hurry. More troubling, Dr. Baggott sometimes indulges in speculative stories that fall short of scientific rigor. An early example is his notion of how the first living cells might have arisen in alkaline hydrothermal vents. The book ends with a lengthy chapter on human consciousness which is part philosophical and part speculative. Dr. Baggott believes that human consciousness, language, and artistic sensibility evolved 40,000 to 50,000 years ago, some 150,000 years after the appearance of our species, Homo sapiens. He does not explain how this happened. Although this hypothesis has not been shown to be incorrect, recent evidence from multiple sources has generally favored a much earlier development of consciousness and language. These sources include new sites of early representational art, indications of self-consciousness in non-human species, the discovery of the same FOXP2 allele in both the Homo sapiens and Neanderthal genomes, and recognition of artistic sensibility in incredibly beautiful hand axes which date back almost half a million years. Dr. Baggott’s emphasis on the sudden and recent emergence of consciousness ignores the alternative evidence.

As an account of human origins, this book is incomplete, in my opinion. The hugely important migrations of Homo sapiens from Africa to all corners of the world are confined to three pages despite the large amount of detailed evidence that has been obtained from archaeological, genetic, and linguistic studies. The next important event in shaping who we are is the adoption of agriculture which in turn led to sedentary ways of life and the creation of ever larger societies, from villages to today’s near-global societies. These in turn were the incubators and users of new technologies that have had such an enormous impact on the human way of life and on the world in which we live. None of this is included in "Origins".

In an endnote to the Epilogue, Dr. Baggott refers to books on Big History including David Christian’s pioneering book "Maps of Time", he claims that their coverage is less scientific than his. This is perhaps true. On the other hand, Dr. Baggott’s treatment of our origins is less complete: I suggest that you read both books!

Finally the discussion of what it means to be human is discussed.

Everyman's guide to the physics, chemistry and biology of us

I'm just past half-way in reading this book. It is very well written with no math to deal with or ignore. There are some chemical symbols, but understanding them is not critical to understanding the writing. All in all it is quite understandable and interesting. It reads almost like a novel, in that the author is telling a story, but with scientific explanations of how the story happens. I highly recommend it if you have an interest in how we came to be here in the universe.

A centerpiece of Blackwell's investigation is his careful reading of the brief treatise Letter on the Motion of the Earth by Paolo Antonio Foscarini, a Carmelite scholar, arguing for the compatibililty of the Copernican system with the Bible. Blackwell appends the first modern translation into English of this important and neglected document, which was placed on the Index of Forbidden Books in 1616. Though there were differing and competing theories of biblical interpretation advocated in Galileo's time—the legacy of the Council of Trent, the views of Cardinal Bellarmine, the most influential churchman of his time, and, finally, the claims of authority and obedience that weakened the abillity of Jesuit scientists to support the new science—all contributed to the eventual condemnation of Galileo in 1633. Blackwell argues convincingly that the maintenance of ecclesiastical authority, not the scientific issues themselves, led to that tragic trial.

A Must Read Book About the Galileo Controversy

This well researched and written book focuses upon the impact of the Counter-Reformation upon Biblical exegesis (interpretation), as determined by the Council of Trent, and how the Catholic Church managed to stumble into perhaps the most humiliating mistake in its long history--the condemnation of the Copernican view of the solar system. Surprising, to me at least (I am not Catholic), is the fact that this book was published by the University of Notre Dame Press, since it pulls no punches in assessing who was at fault and why.

It is one of those rare books that provide a whole new way of looking at a familiar subject. Highly recommended.

Petty wars

The counter-reformation unwittingly provided the weapons with which Galileo would be attacked. Luther challenged church authority and emphasised reliance on and personal understanding of the Bible (sola Scriptura). The Council of Trent was formed to answer this threat. The Council decreed that: God's message was conveyed both through the Bible and unwritten traditions; interpreting the Bible is a matter for the appropriate authorities; "in matters of faith and morals" no one shall dare to interpret the Bible contrary to church tradition and "the unanimous agreement of the Fathers."

Bellarmine, the most important authority in Galileo's time, interpreted these decrees in the most unfortunate way possible for Galileo. Firstly, he took the relation of Bible and tradition to be complementary rather than concurring. Thus the Fathers' approval of geocentrism is independent rather than redundant evidence. Secondly, he took "unanimous agreement of the Fathers" to be achieved when one Father spoke on a matter while the others remained silent. Thus strengthening this independent evidence. Lastly, he interpreted "matters of faith" in such a way that everything in the Bible (geocentrism, the fact that Tobias had a dog, etc.) is a matter of faith. This is the crucial point in Bellarmine's letter to Foscarini. Foscarini and Galileo had a reasonable argument that Copernicanism was not in conflict with the Fathers or the Counsil, but these authoritative interpretations by Bellarmine effectively made any further debate impossible ("checkmate," as Blackwell says).

But Bellarmine and the church establishment had no interest in bringing about Inquisition proceedings. However, Galileo's Aristotelian enemies (with whom he had debated on floating bodies and mechanics) saw an opportunity. By persistently and prominently accusing Galileo of arguing contrary to scripture they forced him into a dilemma: either let the argument stand unopposed (thus blocking his theories from being accepted and pursued) or get involved with the dangerous matter of scriptural interpretation. Galileo chose the latter option; now all the Aristotelians had to do was to sit back and watch the vultures mince this easy pray. Caccini, a petty priest and "a thoroughly nasty person," took the bait and unwittingly executed the Aristotelians' plan. He preached against Galileo with such fervour that his superior had to send Galileo a formal apology (p. 69). And with considerable effort and calculated deceit he managed to force the matter onto the initially reluctant Inquisition (p. 112).

"Two truths cannot contradict one another"

If you want to have a better understanding of what really happened between Galileo and the Church, this book is a good place to start. Blackwell tries to deal fairly with the complex religious and sociocultural backdrop of 16th century western civilization. He points out, for instance, that the Church commissioned Copernicus to save appearances of the incorrect calender predicted by the geocentric theory of Ptolmey, and also that many Jesuit scientists of the day were, at one point, sympathetic to the heliocentric theory being defended by Galileo.

The book acknowledges that, as a devout Catholic himself, Galileo offered detailed explanations of why scripture and science do not conflict in the proposition that the Earth moves around the Sun. The explanations, translated from his own words, are inspiring, and his concepts are surprisingly modern. However, although there were rational Catholic authorities who understood that scripture and science must agree on the same physical truths about the world, they were unfortunately overridden― in the case of heliocentrism― by more powerful legates with an opposing ideology. For someone with a scientific mindset, the key issue that requires our daily vigilance is the unjustifiable silencing of free thought and the abuse of power that can result from centralized authority.

Applying Constructivist methodologies and moral theory, the author analyses a core set of moral dilemmas that ensnare decision-makers amongst state and non-state nuclear aspirants, as well as amongst states committed to preventing horizontal proliferation. The book shows that the character, structure and implications of these dilemmas have not yet been adequately understood or appreciated, and that such an understanding is necessary for an effective set of nonproliferation policies. Furthermore, it shows that the dilemmas’ force and political policy import are evident in the 'discourses' that diverse actors undertake to defend their nuclear choices, and how the dilemmas of nuclear aspirants are implicated in those of nuclear preventers. The author advocates a number of policy recommendations that reinforce some already made by scholars and experts but, more importantly, others that advise significantly different courses of action. The book reveals how the moral dilemmas of nuclear aspiration, avoidance, and prevention constitute the security dilemmas and paradoxes that comprise much of the 21st century security environment.

This book will be of much interest to students of nuclear proliferation, international relations, ethics, and international security studies.

Beautifully written! Roe and Miller captured my heart!

A Story of trust... Trust in yourself and trust in others. Ultimately to trust in your heart to love.
Monroe is trying to live on her own merits, working her way through school and pay her bills with out having to ask her parents that can't afford to help her. When she loses her job, she finds that she will have to do something that her morals and heart tell her not to do.... But she has to survive so she decides to go through with it.
Miller Buchanan is a business owner. Working to help a friend out one night he sees this beauty dancing and is instantly attracted to the beauty of her dance and her beauty as well. Going into his club to get some much needed work done, he spots his Midnight dancer up on his stage and realizes that this is his new employee... one who spilled his drink on him. Caught in a trance he vows he will do anything to help her and have her for his own.
I began this review with Trust. Yes they both Monroe and Miller have issues. Monroe is trying to be independent and struggling to make in through her financial commitments. Miller does not give his heart freely, suffering from the abandonment of his mother and father. When he finds himself falling hard for Monroe he decides to give her the trust that he has been holding back.
This book is credibly addicting! I was sucked in first by the troubles that Monroe has to face to make ends meet. But what captured my heart was the struggle that Miller goes through in order to have the love of his life with him and keep her by his side. A beautiful story that I will admit I was was skeptical of... but only briefly! Miller and Roe captured my heart and I am glad for the loss of sleep and tears that I went through in order to finish reading this beautiful story of a dancer and her love. I give this book 5 Stars and I can't wait to read the next installment of this amazing story.

Midnight Ballerina

Monroe and Miller's story is funny and heart warming. Both of them have a childhood filled with a lot of negative memories that shape them into the adults they are. It was nice to see how both of them together can concur some of their fears and dreams. The authors writing in this book will make you feel as if you personally are going through all the emotions the characters are going through. Cori Williams did a great job writing this.

Miller Buchanan is a business man, who did not have such a good life growing up, he wants to change that. He has his mind set to be successful. No one gets in the way of his goals.

Monroe Hartley is a very caring person. People she cares about must come first before herself when in need. She has quite a few jobs to help out her parents who are struggling financially. Always working and has no time to take care of herself, no time to mingle and have fun. Her dream / passion is dancing but not until she saves some money to pursue it. She'll work anywhere for her dream to come true. If she fails to do so, she would be devastated BUT it won't happen since failure is not acceptable for her.

Miller is being added to my book boyfriend as I type.(winks) I loved how all he wanted to do was take care of Monroe. He likes to go caveman on her. It's nice to read something about people falling in love and takes everything slow to see where things go. But I'm not complaining about jumping someone's bones on their first date either. But for Miller and Monroe, they had too much respect for each other that they made sure they were going somewhere with the relationship before they went in too deep and regret moving too fast in the beginning. Call me old fashion but really, I loved it all the same.

I will never get tired of reading what Cori writes.
Over all this book was good, didn't have A LOT OF SEX but it was a good book to read. A very romantic, sexy and an emotional roller-coaster that took my breath away.
