About the Author
English-born Thomas Paine left behind hearth and home for adventures on the high seas at nineteen. Upon returning to shore, he became a tax officer, and it was this job that inspired him to write The Case of the Officers of Excise in 1772. Paine then immigrated to Philadelphia, and in 1776 he published Common Sense, a defense of American independence from England. After returning to Europe, Paine wrote his famous Rights of Man as a response to criticism of the French Revolution. He was subsequently labeled as an outlaw, leading him to flee to France where he joined the National Convention. However, in 1793 Paine was imprisoned, and during this time he wrote the first part of The Age of Reason, an anti-church text which would go on to be his most famous work. After his release, Paine returned to America where he passed away in 1809.

Incredible piece of work

Tom Paine wrote the "Age of reason" over 230 years ago and it stands the test of time. His assessment of the Bible and his systematic approach to applying reason and logic to decipher whether it is the Word of God or a book written by men is extraordinary. He was one of the few who actually *read* the Bible and then peeled it back for examination. Paine concludes the Bible is not the word of God, it was written by men, loaded with inconsistencies, errors and can not prove authenticity of authorship (e.g., Moses did not write the Torah or first 5 books of the Bible). Paine was a Deist and makes a great case for his belief system. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a thorough analysis of the Bible from beginning to end from a very smart man. Brilliant Religious Discussion

A brilliant work that reads almost like a modern piece of writing. The sheer scope of evidence offered as well as the arguments presented make this a must-read for anyone who seriously contemplates the role of religion and belief in our scoiety. I would suggest this as a must read for everyone preparing for a life in the religious sector - whether minister or priest or rabbi or imam. These are not necessarily individual arguments that need to be addressed (though they are pretty staggering as such); but taken as a whole, a truly "person of faith" needs to explain (to himself, if no one else) how these items Paine presents fit into the beliefs held so strongly.

I liked this book. People who are interested in Thomas Paine should be interested in reading this book... One of the things that was especially interesting is the author's writing style and ability to get his message across. Overall, this book was very well written and I highly recommend to those who have not read. To those who have read it - read it again!

PURE JASINDA WILDER PERFECTION!

"The only way past the pain is through it. You can't escape it. You can't ignore it. Pain, grief, anger, misery... they don't go away - they just increase and compound and get worse. You have to live through them, acknowledge them. You have to give your pain its due."

Jasinda Wilder, you complete me. Just when I thought nothing could ever compare to Falling into You, you gave me Becca and Jason and turned my world upside down. I will be honest, I was afraid of this book. I felt that a second book in the series would take away from and could never live up to the perfection of its prequel, since the story of Nell and Colton was not only a truly epic tale of loss, healing and finding love again, but also one of the sexiest books I have ever had the pleasure of reading... and re-reading. Well, I admit I was wrong and I should have trusted Ms Wilder to blow my mind once more. This book was outstanding, unforgettable, so different from the prequel and yet so inspiring in its own right. But we warned, if you are expecting a Nell and Colton sequel, you will be disappointed because while this book follows the same timeline as Falling into You, it has different main characters and theirs is a parallel storyline, but with shared events that deeply affected all the characters and with frequent cross-overs. I will tell you only this, you will not be disappointed. Not for one second.

Our heroine is Becca, Nell's best friend since childhood. She is a shy, quiet, conscientious young girl who never strayed from her responsibilities, always a brilliant student and model daughter to her overprotective parents. The story starts from that moment in Falling into You when Nell stands Jason up on their first date and tells him he should ask her friend Becca out instead because she's always had a crush on him. One date is all it takes for these two teenagers to realise they were made for each other. But their relationship is not rushed, it is timed perfectly, showing us two young people falling in love slowly, naturally, irrevocably. We watch them have all their firsts, mesmerised by their innocence, curiosity, fear, and yet nothing is overdone and even the most innocent of acts such as holding hands has the power of leaving us breathless. Each milestone in their relationship is earned and we see them grow together as individuals, drawing strength from their connection and giving each other the courage to be the people they always wanted to become.

"I wasn't sure where we were or where we were going or what time it was, and I didn't care. I turned my head and met his eyes, and then, with a deep breath, slid my hand underneath his. His eyes widened and his breath hitched, but he didn't hesitate to wind his fingers between mine. He smiled, and everything was better than fine."

Becca's progression from a shy and softly spoken teenager with a speech impediment to a confident woman unafraid to express what she wants was beautifully written. We get to understand what drives her, what stalls her and where her strength comes from. The contrast between the restrained woman that she was in everyday life and the one that would `come out to play' during moments of intimacy with Jason made this character impossible not to love. The fire that was suppressed under her gentle exterior was truly palpable and it floored me that only Jason's love made her comfortable enough to show her true self to him.

"You'd never think it, but my quiet, hyper-intelligent, overachieving, rule-following girlfriend was a voracious, insatiable lover."

But Becca's true strength lies in her empathy and ability to love unconditionally - nothing less could have made her survive the constant heartaches in her life.

Jason, on the other hand, did not have a home life to set strong foundations for the man he ends up becoming. The only thing he learnt to rely on was himself and that he had two choices in life - follow his father's example and become the product of his own upbringing, driven by bitterness over a life he would never end up living, or break the cycle and purposely become the very opposite of his father. Becca's love plays a great role in this, but I believe they are each other's pillars of strength - the perfect yin and yang - and their bond is the only reason they manage to weather the storms of life.

"What if... what if I turn into him? What if I am like him?"

Be prepared to cry, be prepared to scream, be prepared to build a shrine to Jasinda Wilder because this book is going to own you. I have been struggling to pinpoint the reason why these stories move me so deeply, why every scene manipulates my emotions so effortlessly, and I think I have finally found an explanation - Ms Wilder writes from her heart and you can sense that in every single word. This book might appear as just another book about first loves and the lessons learned along the way, but don't be fooled - she will break your heart, sometimes more than once, she will make you remember your own past, your own firsts, your own heartaches, your own hangups, and she will make it all better by giving you a story that you will never forget.

Where to start? First off, I would like to say this book deserves 10 stars ★★★★★★★★★★ Because it is THAT AMAZING folks. May I add, more emotional and better than FIY, if it's possible? But it is, well to me at least. I think I loved and enjoyed Becca and Jason's story and POV from things more than Nell,Kyle and Colton. I still love them of course and FIY, but this one, wow. You be the judge when you read ;-)
Falling Into Us is a parallel story line. Meaning, it follows the same timeline, but gravitates on two different characters in the same circle of friends. It is not really anything like Falling Into You. I mean it is, but isn't. The first how much is about Jason, his friends and then there is Becca of course and all of them are tied into Nell's, Kyle's and Colton's story. I loved reading more about Jason, Becca and all their friends. It was awesome getting to see some things from their POV and their eyes, very interesting and they loved their friends deeply. Especially Kyle and Nell. There were soo many little things I loved. One thing Nell's mom and how sweet she is with Jason, Becca and everyone.
Becca, I felt bad for a lot, but in the end I was happy and very proud of her. She is such a great friend and person. I want to say a lot, but I can't give away too much! But I promise, you guys will LOVE IT, even more than FIY! PROMISE! Must read, ladies! ❤❤

This story has it all. Friendship, laughter, hurt, passion, tears, fear, lust, pain and ever lasting love. You will not be disappointed when you read this. The journey that Jason and Becca take is a long one, but one well worth traveling. Robert Desjarlais works against the grain of media representations of homelessness by showing us not anonymous stereotypes but individuals. He draws on conversations as well as observations, talking with and listening to shelter residents to understand how they relate to their environment, to one another, and to those entrusted with their care. His book considers their lives in terms of a complex range of forces and helps us comprehend the linkages between culture, illness, personhood, and political agency on the margins of contemporary American society.

Shelter Blues is unlike anything else ever written about homelessness. It challenges social scientists and mental health professionals to rethink their approaches to human subjectivity and helps us all to better understand one of the most pressing problems of our time.

This is an intriguing book that is organized around the lives of homeless shelter residents in a particularly unique facility in Boston. The shelter is located in a post-modern architecture anomaly, a masterpiece which was never completed, allowing the author to contemplate the idea of beautiful ruins, the sublime, and compare these ideas to the lives of the homeless residents. The book is incredible in that is meshes a wide range of theoretical approaches to studying sociology and attempts to discuss notions of experience, fear, and survival which are really difficult to take on. The book is not so much a case study, more a study of life and its effects.

Inacurate description

I'm very interested in homelessness and I enjoy social theory, but this book is far more academic than the description made it seem. I couldn't get more than 20 pages into it without my head spinning. If you are looking for something light this book is not the right choice!

About the Author

William Crain is professor of psychology at the City College of New York and is the editor of the journal, Encounter: Education for Meaning and Social Justice. He and his wife Ellen F. Crain, a pediatrician, have three grown children.

This fifth edition of Theories of Development is basically similar to the earlier editions. Its purpose, once again, is to introduce students to a variety of theorists, giving special attention to those who have contributed to that distinctly developmental perspective that began with Rousseau. The book focuses, that is, on writers who help us understand how development might arise from our inner promptings and spontaneous interests and how we might view the world differently at different stages of life.

This new edition updates several chapters. Most notably, it discusses recent critiques of Piaget's theory and the growing research that bears on Schachtel's theory of early memories. The book also suggests how Werner's holistic approach is becoming increasingly relevant, especially with respect to the current push for early literacy instruction. Werner's approach cautions us against rushing in to teach reading and writing skills at young ages. Instead, we should consider all the activities out of which literacy might more naturally emerge.

In the prior edition, published in 2000, I added an epilogue on the standards and testing movement that was sweeping the United States. I pointed out that this educational movement was focusing so exclusively on adults' goals and expectations that it was robbing children of the chance to develop their special strengths at their own stage of life. It would have been great if the standards movement had subsided since then. Instead, it has become even more powerful, causing children even more harm, as described in the revised epilogue.

Over the years, many people have contributed to this book. I would like to give special thanks to my wife Ellen. As always, she provided unwavering support and valuable insight. I also am deeply indebted to our children. It was initially by watching them that I became so impressed by the growth process I decided to write this book about it. Our children are grown now, but they continue to offer support and ideas that mean a great deal to me.

This new edition has benefited from critical readings and suggestions by professors Laurie S. Hunter, Francis Marion University; Coady Lapierre, Tarleton State University; Chadwick Royal, North Carolina Central University; and Judith Torney-Purta, the University of Maryland. Students renting beware!

If you're renting the book for class and using Kindle for PC, there are going to be a few excerpts missing. The first piece is Bartolome's In Defense of Indians, there are a few more that my class hasn't gotten to. Apparently this only happens on the Kindle for PC, as the missing excerpt shows up on the iPad. I've contacted Amazon and they said they're contacting the publisher. If you're going to be renting this book for class, I'd check first with Amazon to see if the problem has been resolved. ONLY applies to Kindle for PC.

About the Author
Joshua Cole is Professor of History at the University of Michigan. Specializing in the social and cultural history of France since the Revolution of 1789, he earned his Ph.D. at University of California at Berkeley. He is the author of The Power of Large Numbers: Population, Politics, and Gender in Nineteenth-Century France (2000).

Carol Symes is an Associate Professor of history and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the history department at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where she has won the top teaching award in the College of Liberal Arts and Science. Her main areas of study include medieval Europe, especially France and England; cultural history; history of information media and communication technologies; history of theatre. Her first book was A Common Stage: Theater and Public Life in Medieval Arras (2007).

Judith Coffin (Ph.D. Yale University) is Associate Professor at the University of Texas, Austin, where she won University of Texas President's Associates' Award for Teaching Excellence. Previously, she taught at Harvard University and the University of California, Riverside. Her research interests are the social and cultural history of gender, mass culture, slavery, race relations, and colonialism. She is the author of The Politics of Women's Work: The Paris Garment Trades, 1750–1915.

Robert Stacey (Ph.D. Yale University) is Professor of History, Dean of the Humanities, and a member of the Jewish Studies faculty at the University of Washington, Seattle. A long-time teacher of Western civilizations and medieval European history, he has received Distinguished Teaching Awards from both the University of Washington and Yale University, where he taught from 1984 to 1988. He has authored and coauthored four books, including a textbook, The Making of England to 1399. He holds an M.A. from Oxford University and a Ph.D. from Yale.

THIS IS NOT AN EBOOK

It's an interesting book, and it's probably a good one, but it's nearly impossible to read in this format. It is a book file, yes, but that doesn't make it an ebook. Imagine taking pictures of a textbook, and then zooming each page, moving it around to read all the text, turning the page to see all of an informative two-page spread with images, and moving THAT around...

Even my desktop monitor (22 inches) was not big enough to display entire pages.

I bought this in ebook form so I could read it on my phone, but eyestrain and frustration made me give up. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND unless you plan to only read it on a large screen!

Detailed, but...

Does give a detailed account and transitions nicely, but my only caveat would be that there are biases. I don't mean biased by the fact that history is written by the victors-- something the textbook does point out, but bias as in that is not all to the story. Only a single perspective is told-- from a certain religious analysis and I don't think that's an objective representation when in all other cases, both perspectives are told.
