About the Author
Dr. Lewis is the President of KACEL, Inc. Professional and Community Education. She is also adjunct faculty within the Maricopa County Community College District where she is accredited to teach in all level of EMS courses and is an Examiner for the National Registry of EMTs. After serving as EMT/FSC Department Chair at Phoenix College since 1986, Dr. Lewis retired in 2005. During that time she was also a member of the Arizona EMS Council (Governor's Appointment), and member of the National EMS Curriculum Development Group. She has worked as a critical care nurse and educator, has authored several articles and contributed to texts on nursing care, education theory and techniques, as well as various cardiovascular topics. Dr. Lewis holds many industry affiliations and credentials, is an active RN and holds a BSN in nursing and a PhD in Education.

About the Author

David Romano founded Tri-Tech Pathways Inc. to bring STEM education to students with a real-world industry perspective. He is a proven technical leader whose engineering career has spanned over twenty-five years and multiple High-Tech companies, including Raytheon, Motorola, HP, Intel and two start-up companies. He is also the co-author of multiple technology patents and he is currently the president and CEO of Tri-Tech Pathways Inc.

David is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in education as part of Intel's Tuition-for-Teaching grant. He holds a BS in Electrical Engineering and a MA in Theology. He is actively involved in STEM advisory and teaching roles. He is also active member of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA).

Not for hardcore FPGA developers - Great for the Novice

Don't expect to learn how to write RTL hardware descriptions from this book. Do expect to have a complete guide to using the Xilinx ISE development environment and several different Xilinx FPGA based boards. All firmware that you build and load into hardware is already written. The book is simply a guide to compiling and loading this firmware into FPGA devices. As such it is complete and accurate. Easy to read and understand.

When Thoreau’s injunction to simplify, simplify, is translated into the context of business management, the result is this labyrinthine treatise. George, author of Lean Six Sigma, and "complexity expert" Wilson contend that overcomplication is an insidious drain on businesses. A proliferation of product and service offerings intended to boost business actually imposes hidden costs and masks the unprofitability of stagnating lines, while consumers are often baffled and irritated by the plethora of superficially distinct options. The authors’ cure for complexity, however, seems almost as complicated as the disease. They offer a maze of arcane diagnostic tools for assessing the complexity and profitability of products, services and customers, along with advice on how to simplify, standardize or eliminate them altogether, and pile on mathematical equations, byzantine flowcharts and highly technical case studies ("at 50KW the DC voltage doubled, cutting the current in half—which meant the design for the lower power ratings could be used all the way to 80KW"). They provide a number of useful insights, actually, although lumping them under the trendy rubric of "complexity" doesn’t add much conceptual rigor. Unfortunately, the method of quantitatively analyzing the profit impact of minute components of larger processes seems itself an onerous layer of complexity to add to the project of simplifying business practices. The accountants and process design engineers who might read the book will find much food for thought, but are also likely to put it aside when it comes time to roll up their sleeves and get to work.

The methods they offer to expose complexity could be the the next big strategic business weapon--dominant companies such as Wal-Mart, Toyota, Dell Computer, and Capitol One are already using these techniques to great success. Although some of the concepts presented are easy to understand, such as reducing the number of steps in production, reducing waste, and creating standardized tasks and procedures, others are quite advanced (functional analysis, cojoint analysis, exploiting commonality), and there are numerous equations and diagrams that require a mathematical mind to comprehend. Compelling Business Case for Conquering Complexity

I found Conquering Complexity provides an excellent framework and lays out a compelling business case for why and how you should focus on complexity.

This is the best guide out there in terms of a comprehensive approach to identify, quantify and attack complexity. The book is a very practical and pragmatic read with a wealth of real world examples and illustrations that reinforce concepts layed out in a logical sequence.

In researching a number of books though there are many that contain bits and pieces of concepts that relate to complexity, I have found that none of them tackle the concept of complexity as a discipline that must be mastered as Conquering Complexity does. I found it to be a refreshing, compelling book that you can follow step by step to create a complexity focus and agenda in your organization. There is tremendous power in purchasing the book for co-workers or Managers to help raise their complexity IQ and see what is possible. I continue to learn from the book as I refer back to it frequently. I would highly recommend it to anyone or any organization that is looking to continuously improve or to create greater value. I really found the sections on Product/Service proliferation to be right on, and a wealth of information. - Rodney

In Conquering Complexity in Your Business: How Wal-Mart, Toyota, and Other Top Companies Are Breaking Through the Ceiling on Profits and Growth, co-authors Michael L. George and Steven A. Wilson maintain that in every business, there's too much complexity, which erodes profitability, confuses the customer, and adds costs. The solution: identify and eliminate this complexity where it doesn't count - and add it in, where it does. Chapters discuss adding value with complexity which attracts with `customization' and `variety', of identifying places where complexity doesn't belong, and for quantifying the costs of achievement and complexity in both products and services.

This is an amazingly revealing book about the dangers of complexity that is not consciously managed. And just what does managing comlexity entail? I the authors' words, it means

- Eliminating complexity that customers will not pay for

- Exploiting the complexity customers will pay for, and

- Minimizing the cost of the complexity you offer

In part 1 the case is made for conquering complexity in your business' portfolio (number of offerings) and processes (number of ways of doing the same thing). Part 2 develops the conceptual framework for measuring and managing complexity. In part 3, you are shown how to apply these concepts to the elimination, exploitation and reducing the costs of complexity.

Lastly, part 4 shows how to create an organisational culture that supports complexity management, conquer the complexity in your value chain and even apply the principles in mergers and acquisitions.

GOOD TOOL FOR EXPOSITORS!

The Bible is a book written over a span of 1500 years, by almost 40 writers who hailed from different cultures and language groups. Thus the 66 books of the Bible need to be analyzed in their own culture, language, and context if one has to understand the message clearly. This is easier said than done.

Many methods have come up to understand the message of the Bible objectively, and each method contributes something or other to the cumulative task of clarifying the message. The Sentence-block-diagram method is one of these approaches which yields fascinating insights into what was said. More so because this type of analysis clearly shows sentence connections in our language which connection might not be obvious immediately.

The only weakness of the book is that while it shows the result of analysis, it does not contain any interpretation of the text. Thus this book will be useful only for those who wish to get the analyzed text, but not for those who are looking for a Bible Exposition.

I want to thank Dr Johnson Philip for this honest review. From the reviewer point of view he had pointed out exactly the sole objective of this Guided Bible Reading Series.

The whole objective is to free the reader from reading any interpretations into the text and let the text speaks for itself. You need to see the structure outline clearly so that you do not read your own ideas into the text. In this sense, as Dr Johnson Philip points out, there are no interpretations and expositions of the passages. However as Dr. Johnson Philip points out, it is an excellent TOOL for expositors all the same!

Simple and Helpful

This is a simple, straight forward sentence diagram of Galatians. I've always made my own sentence diagrams when studying passages, but I got this kind of as a reference to see someone else's take on it.
He adds no commentary or editing to the text (WEB translation) but merely breaks down each individual sentence into basic outline format. I wish he would have done more to illustrate how the individual sentences work together within the paragraph, but I guess that was beyond the scope of his purpose here. Yes, this is a very simple book, but for the price, it is perfect!
